Acid Etch & Penetration

So, ran loads of test pieces but couldn't be bothered to take pics of them all but this is what I've gone with based on weld settings, decent looking bead and etched penetration.

The lugs with three holes in look really good. The multi run on lifting eye has a lot of silica build up, did you wire brush between runs?

Yeah, every pass gets a blast off with the wire cup brush on an angle grinder.

Silicon islands are just the nature of the wire in most cases. Won't cause any harm. They are a real pain if your painting it after wards mind. Great job there bede.

Is it all going to be ultrasound tested or bombed??

Hate to be a pooper, but must say, every lifting beam ive ever seen or worked with/around has been made of two channels back to back, with the lug plates being bolted between the channels and then welded??
That to one side though, nicely done :thumbs up:

Unless I have read the thread wrong, the design is not Bede's just the job of welding to the design of the beam.

So now I'm used to the hired welder and I've got it tweaked to exactly how I want it, it's purring along nicely now. I'd love to run another acid test but at the moment I'm up against the clock as I need to get this job finished before I go on holiday in 2 weeks so not got time to check the penetration levels that it's giving me.

These root runs are running at 32V, 1.2mm wire at 14 m/min and at the travel speed I'm running it's kicking out between 290-300 amps.

the hired welder, is that the esab you've shown in one of the pics above? Happy with its performance? do you also use esab wire? - just curious, as I'm about to buy an esab welder for a test

Yes, it's quite different from what I'm used to and I'm not using the synergic function as I've not used it before so I have it all set manually but now I have it set to my liking it's performing brilliantly. Very consistent.

And yes, we use ESAB wire and it's good stuff.
