We are trading in the wife's Kuga before it goes the same way they have offered £6k against a 2022 Mokka EV with 5k miles on it (£20k vehicle)

Whilst looking for a vehicle I read another dealer's review....all good 300+ except for two, who were slagging him for selling cars with engine malfunction DTC histories. BOTH turned out to be Fords. One was a Ranger.

I'm not saying it's the case here, but having known a few people who've done the same, what's actually wrong with it?

Just because it's stopped , doesn't necessarily mean it's terminal, and surely most cars are worth throwing a few £ worth of diagnostics at. If it's an easy fix, you don't have to keep it, and if it is more to fix than it's worth then so be it.

But sending it for scrap just because its got some lights on (which could well be interlinked) without knowing the actual cause, seems a bit crazy to me.

No it's at the local garage after diagnostics that the decision was made. He's still trying to working out the bill. Car's worth £2.5K (running). I spent £700 or a ABS module repair already. The previous autoelec's comment was that Ford use cheap kit and to buy a good quality Jap i.e. Toyota. NOT Nissan. If he fixes it what's next? In fairness it is 14yrs old. Toyota 20 yr+ trucks are still good. It's reliability,then reliability and once more reliability that matter.

Yep, that was yet another post that is totally irrelevant to BEVs. Cynicism chip - no, just has a ‘chip on his shoulder’ as they say.

I read these comments about public transport for the masses and no private transport. Those comments must come from townies - or is everyone going to need to move to large conurbations? More thought required by some?

There's no chips on these shoulders. I take full responsibility for my own decisions, mistakes, successes & life. I also use my brain, observe & do some independent thinking about where things are going, what policies and directions mean & how they are likely to affect different people in the not-too-distant future.... not just whether or not it its an issue for me.
My position financially & age means I'm less likely than a great many people to be hugely disadvantaged by the policies and hardships that are coming... but that doesn't mean I sit in an ivory tower & go "I'm alright Jack".

I live in rural Wales btw, where public transport is irregular, grossly inadequate and sparce. I do not need anyone telling me it heeds thinking through!
However - those who are forcing us out of the car..... 1, are based in Westminster & large conurbations in large part, & 2, have a great deal of our money (plus plum big salary positions gifted by organisations buying their influence etc) - and can easily afford cars I future when the majority won't be able to.... & demonstrably do not care one jot about anyone else.

Frankly, you are holier-than-though & pompous, & clearly view the world only from your comfortable (& short-sighted) perspective.

EV's (& the manner in which the change is being managed & directed) are an indicator of far bigger things and overall plans that affect the country, indeed the world (I mean politically & socially to be clear) - & you think you're so smart, & yet whinge that it's off-topic?

Maybe you're just nowhere near as clever & enlightened as your own high opinion of yourself leads you to believe huh?
(In general I try not to be rude - but seeing as you make no effort on that front.....)

I made that comment and I live in the middle of nowhere. Seven miles from the nearest town. I need personal transport but the future is a long time coming. You do seem very narrow minded where the future is concerned. We will probably both be in the ground and not see the results of current affairs. It rarely has an effect in the short term but the long term is bleak for personal transport.

Rural folk are disadvantaged again, all these schemes are thought up by city folk….high speed broad band for all, yea right, as long as you live in the villages on the main route. Public transport, yea right as long as you live on a viable bus route. We have neither by the way. Electric car chargers, yea but only once they upgrade the power lines to the village.

All these schemes need to start somewhere……but non of them will suit all the people all the time!

Absolutely, we don't have mobile phone signal here so have to use WiFi calling. When the internet goes down we have no phone.
There is one bus to town per day but the stop is half a mile from my home.
Oh and no taxi will travel out here either.
But I love it here

Looking at a Tesla yesterday quality of finish leaves a lot to be desired, paint finish body gaps not good, was not a friends just a parked one, so did not get a look inside.

Hydrogen might not be practical but the image I posted is the tip of an iceberg. Plus plugging in all those EV's in overnight will not be possible with our current infastructure.

Grid - you are almost certainly right when you say the grid of today couldn’t cope with every vehicle being an ev and being charged overnight. But that’s not what anyone is proposing. Given cars with engines of some form will be sold for the next 12 years, possibly longer if the deadlines are extended, then how long before a substantial majority of vehicles on the road are pure EV? 30 years? That’s the grid that will have to cope with every car being charged, assuming something else doesn’t come along and either displace electric or supplement it.

Hydrogen - I’ve read, but I don’t know conclusively, that to make hydrogen using electricity takes 3-4 times the amount of energy than you would use if you stuck that in a battery. So the grid won’t cope with battery cars but could cope with way more electric needed for hydrogen production? Then you’ve got issues with storing it, transporting it, leaks, explosions, the fact it burns with an invisible flame, poor energy density so you need lots of it… there’s a lot of downsides. It may well have a part to play in certain areas (agriculture, haulage?) , but personally I don’t see it being a solution for mass personal transport. I was involved in a trial to run a float glass furnace off 20% hydrogen last year, the challenges faced made me realise that we are a long way off using this as a replacement for petrol.

This was my point really, the timescale is for a future nobody can predict with accuracy. We all have a view and somewhere in there the reality will spawn.
I personally won't live to see it but my grandchildren will. I also know I can't influence it so making the best decision for my circumstances, just like you have, is the only way we can move on.
