So back to the bay... I do have trouble sometimes sticking to the plan (there's a plan???), but as I see it there's no better time than now to get the bay shaved. Also I'm part way through so best get it done and sealed asap...
I've no idea what this hole is about, so I've filled it. Possibly not enough gap for mig welding, I was proud of the fit-up and could maybe have chanced tig, anyhow, I didn't...
...I've also filled the AC holes after deciding that a) I have AC on the 5 Serious, and I rarely need it, and b) I don't really need the aggravation of sourcing oem AC kit or doing a clean install...
These holes are in plain sight with the engine installed (unless I manage to pick up some equal length headers) so I decided to blank them...

This leaves just the top of the rad surround/slam panel. It has a few divits that I'd like to delete, as well as some captive nuts that may be involved in securing the headlamps..... of which I have zero at present. However, I'm not going out and out shave(?), so am content to just tidy up above the rad....

Incidentally, had a conversation (online) with my local auto paint supplier about epoxy mastic.... seemingly he hasn't come across it before, suggested either 2k epoxy primer or a bitumen type coating. Presumably em121, jotun 87 etc. is geared towards restorers (apart from marine people obviously), and my local supplier is geared towards crash repair... Luckily, Bilt Hamber and miller oils em121 are available online...
Are you going to out the em121 over the primer you've sprayed or somewhere else? I found it only stuck to bare metal so just asking as you're the bay sprayed.
I really can't get over how well it looks just with a bit of primer and sanding.
Also what's the name of the do-dad that lets you earth on car and not have to use the clamp?

I plan to use it on the subframe, axle, and suspension components... Possibly the underside too
...the magnet/earth clamp? I got it off Wish lol, comes in handy except when you unknowingly nudge it onto a painted surface and can't understand why you're not getting any arc

Got around to reattaching the captive nut at the end of the front chassis leg..... I tried previously cutting a diagonal across the hole and tacking it on from the outside but it didn't last...
...so I went for this option. Even welding directly onto the nut it took two attempts ....
And that's it closed up again.
Now for some bling:
Yes I know my time could have been better spent, but I'm deciding what colour to go for in the engine bay so it seemed like a good idea.
The rest of the day was spent removing this:-
It's main purpose was to aid in the fitting of the chassis leg, which it did surprisingly well! However it's getting in the way now, so out it goes...must give it a lick of paint

I guess it'd be personal preference... Are you using liners? If so epoxy 2k primer would probably suffice...

Ok, so here it is without the ir light:

Fibreglass mastic on the seams.... probably overkill as they're stitch welded. What you see is the lightweight filler to smooth the blemishes.
After that, I've some eurepox to seal it again as I've gone through to metal in a few spots.

.... again, more rubbing down, filling, rubbing down, finding bits I've missed and doing it all over again until I finally decided that at the end of the day it's a engine bay, I'm in danger of disappearing up a black hole if I don't get it sealed again...
So that's two coats of eurepox 2k epoxy primer, on top of bare metal, original paint (scuffed), filler and new seam sealer. Deagreased and panel wiped....I found a box of tack cloths and left them intact (pun
)in the box... Typical me...Two coats with 20 minute coffee break in-between and is under ir lamp - fairly low-tech lamp, it was bought originally for hatchling chicks

Thanks, it's not perfect in the flesh, but I'm happy with it so far.... Ask me again in a day or two after it's cured a bit more
It's sprayed on, I used a cheap gravity fed gun I'd forgotten I'd bought years ago and found it still in the packaging... Does the job for primer though
In fairness I only have one of those electric sprayers for 60 quid so you have to me working with way better tools. The 2K for the suspension has been good and in fairness I've been spraying onto mastic not primer so the surface is a bit harder to work but I'd be tempted to try use it for priming just to get the car looking reasonable on some level before it got sprayed elsewhere im not thinking of doing any external pannels but wheel arches and the like might be okay..... Maybe..... Probably not.

I'm sure it'd be fine.... As with mine you'd probably need to flat it before colour anyway
Depends who you ask... I sealed with 2k epoxy primer to preserve the steel, then filler, then a high solids 2k epoxy primer to seal again

... nearing the completion of the engine bay area, I decided to just cut out the section along the top of the radiator and make one section rather than doing four different pieces. That way it should hopefully be straighter...
Sorry, some of these pics are quite dark as my battery was low....
Next, I need to tackle these:-
...the frame rails. These ones, as you can hopefully see, are crushed. I couldn't work on them on the jig, as it was in the way, also, there's not much access from the top. So I'm thinking I need do drill them off, straighten them, and plug weld them back on. If anyone has been here before, I'd appreciate any input/direction/advice???
