i didnt read the manual first and the rods have a range of 120/160
But it doesn't go into thermal shutdown?
Quality unit with poor leads then - leads are consumables anyway
no not yet i was going to carry on but decided in the name of science to stop as it would cool down while i fixed it

I don't really see the point in hammering it to see if it shuts down 
They are the cheapest of the cheap yet may be a very good set but still designed for hobby use as all Aldi tools are, if it allows people to weld up items at home then it's doing it's job and an out and out bargain at £70 or even £60 with the discount code.
I suppose it would be nice to be able to say it ran a full box of rods without a problem, I think the last time I burnt a full box in one go was...errrrrrr...never, in fact not even a quarter box
If the requirement is to run rod after rod then I would have thought a proven professional machine would be the choice, I paid twice the price for my R-tech and don't even consider that a serious machine.

What rods would you tell a beginner to get, got one today as a chrismas present, to me from the kids 
I know not to get the Aldi rods, but what do I get, 6013 or 7018, and what size rods, will just be used for fun, nothing structurally important. Mainly have 3mm box section to play with, till I find a local source of cheap scrap to play with

I'd recommend murex white box 6013, about 13 pounds a pack. IMHO I think they are on par with about every 6013 I've burnt, unless you are doing something special.

I would go with E6013, 2.5 or 3.2mm size.
Good brands include Phoenix, Murex, GYS, INE, Esab. Avoid Parweld, Super6, Clarke etc.

Interestingly I once had to buy some Aldi rods for a rush job and they were one of the best I have ever used, however I suspect they don't always use the same supplier, although I don't think they are as bad as MM or Screwfix for bartering with the cheapest supplier.

Really it's more a matter of buying what's known to be good more than avoiding certain ones. I have used cheap rods which were good but every time you go for them again you're taking a gamble.
Having to either bin or use a box of rubbish isn't my idea of fun. Even as an experienced welder I don't consider them worth the little saving for having to work harder to get an acceptable weld.
Something I forgot to say is that they all need keeping dry, they exist to suck up moisture!
I once had some cheap rods (all that was available quickly) and they were ok. But after a couple of damp days in the workshop they were adequate for stirring paint but little else - I doubt any skilled welder could have made them work.
I bought one of the Aldi inverter welders yesterday and tried it out today. My first impressions are very favourable with absolutely nothing to find fault with, especially for the price. The welding leads look perfectly good to me and I can't see why anyone would need to replace them. Arc start seems even better than with my original Wolf inverter welder (75A) as used in the weld-off tests many years ago, and still going strong. By comparison, the LIDL Parkside 80A (approx) inverter welder which I also bought a few weeks ago is not as good as the Wolf, in my opinion, because it's relatively difficult to start the arc. I may risk sacrificing the Parkside unit by trying it out with an HT spark device I made. This works very well with transformer based welders but I always thought it must be a bit risky adding it to inverter electronics. I now aim to find out.
