Fractions are a doddle. Divide half an inch by two 1/2" > 1/4" or by four 1/8".

Measuring centipedes must be difficult because they won't keep still. Also, do you have to multiply the result by 100 legs?

It’s getting 10 of them to stay lined up when measuring a belt billet that’s the problem. The wee beggers get all over the place, and don’t start me on that chrysalis thing. Nothing worse than having to recheck your measurements when a butterfly bursts forth at the wrong moment.

Been away from Blighty 17 years, hate it when I pick up an old imperial/metric tape- I only ever want the metric side, and the bleeder's upside down!

I'm 64, educated in imperial, but I'd happily consign it to the dustbin of history.

The building trade went metric in 1971, no one told them,

you still buy 2x4 timbers and even young lads build to inches, after a week or so.

Not with my tape measures they wont.
All metric excusing a few old ones.

If it wasnt for owning to old lathes od never use imperial again.

And if someone gives me a measurement in inches on site there told to do one and give me a proper measurement.

I'm old school and don't really like metric as there's only a factor of ten. Whereas my steel rule has 1/8ths 16ths 12ths and if I can't find an exact measurement in inches, then a couple of mm will get added. I build things that are in metric and Imperial in the same structure. My lathe is Imperial but I can use it to do metric. I don't see the problem. Bushels, pecks, acres, chains, furlongs, fathoms,Cables, Pounds, shillings, pence, grains, gills, quarts, gallons, scruple, drachm, troy, avoirdupois, apothecaries, stones, cwt, tons, slugs, perch, pole, logarithms, sines, co sines, groats, I can go on. It made mental arithmatic a necessity. Doing long division of £sd was exciting!. Now you reach for your iphone for an answer. I've misspelled a word, can you find it?

Funny that, majority of my gunbelt customers are men, and 99% of the time, they measure in imperial, never metric.

As to parking 1 foot away from the kerb? Who carries a tape measure.

Lifes too short to crawl about the ground, with your measuring stick in your hand (ooh, errr, missus), but........whatever lights your candle.

Machining in decimal inches, just because my lathe is imperial, metric for everything else.

Metric is just simpler for anything more complicated than lengths. There aren't even imperial units for EMF or current.

Oh, and you'll never confuse torque with energy using metric.

Then again, I was born in the 70's so was bought up with Metric

I work with drawings drawn by Americans and I have to convert everything.
It is time consuming and annoying



Although you can keep your Kilometres and Litres , ill go for miles and gallons

I seem to remember that when I was at college in Chelmsford in the 1960s there was a timber merchant by the name of Sadd selling timber by the unit, which if I remember correctly was about 13" - or did I dream it?

That's not 4x2.
It's 3 15/16" x 1 27/32"

Surely the difference between 4 x 2 and 2 x 4 is the way round you hold it when you measure it?

I'm happy to work in either system.
But I really do get a problem with the "IT MUST BE IN METRIC" fascists that created such abortions
as 12.7mm BSF one former workmate insisted in being in our on-line catalogue.
The company management dispensed with his services not long after.

I live in a metrinch world and probably always will, still surrounded by imperial measurements in just about everything i do. Just today put a 420mm wide tractor tyre on a 38" rim and made up a 1/2" hydraulic hose
