We produced some gas turbine blade designs in metric and were talking to an American foundry. They started talking about tolerance in mils. Took us a shocked minute to realise they were referring to thous.

I go in to fasteners supply and ask for 12mm bolts 2inch long tape measurements I use metric and imperial which ever shows up the easiest on the tape .drawings are easy enough to read in metric as there meters and millimetres 15oo= a meter and a half

I have an imperial only tape on my desk - stops anyone borrowing it as they don't understand it ;-)

It does give us all an excuse to buy twice as many tools. That’s a good thing. I guess it is strange putting a 19mm socket on a 3/8” drive ratchet though.

Especially when working to 400/600 centers.
Osb is availible in 1200x2400

It comes in 1220x2440 mm. Centimeters are for children and dressmakers.

I’ve just ordered some 4mm diameter bright steel from brundles , for some reason it comes in 10 foot lengths.

Often find manufacturers drawings from europe in centimetres.

There is a good chance that they will be ten foot, but don't rely on it, they will be 3 metre random lengths and could be a couple of inches short.

I measured the bathroom up for tiles and converted my feet and inches into metric to make it easier for the shop. Took them to the tile shop. He promptly converted it back to feet and inches and worked out how many tiles I needed. Then converted to metric to charge me for them! Bizarre.

Yup. Especially as tiles are generally in metric sizes and sold with the m2 per pack listed.

Then again, I was born in the 70's so was bought up with Metric

Same here, taught metric at school, used imperial when helping my dad or grandad. I still prefer imperial and often work entirely in imperial, I just find it far easier to think in imperial.

But I really do get a problem with the "IT MUST BE IN METRIC" fascists that created such abortions
as 12.7mm BSF one former workmate insisted in being in our on-line catalogue.

Quite right too, there is no such thing as 12.7mm it's a sodding 1/2" and that's the end of the argument.

I understand why some people prefer metric (mainly because it's base ten), but I just prefer imperial, mind you I know I'm odd as I like doing mental arithmetic rather than using a calculator.

If we are going to be metric then it's time we went fully metric and decimal to boot, a week should be 10 days, lets scrap months being different lengths, none of this 60 seconds to a minute, 60 mins to an hour and 24 hours to a day rubbish
