Anyone recognise what fault this dashboard warning light refers to?

Same as the one that came on on my little Audi....mpg dropped 50% as soon as it came on. I took it to a local vag specialist. Their analysis was "various sporadic faults". They reset it, mpg went back up and lights stayed off.
Bit disappointed really as I would have liked to know what the problem was....maf sensor, o2 sensor etc etc. So I'm none the wiser at the moment.

Yes. It's not a service light in this model. It basically indicates an engine malfunction of some sort.

It may go out on its own too, it can even be the gas cap not sealed.

Or reset it so if it happens again you know the codes are relevent, not codes that have been set at a previous time and have no use to fixing the existing fault.

It means something went wrong with an engine sensor. As above, you'll need a code reader to plug into the diagnostic socket to find out more information. Maybe your car has a way of displaying that information, but it's more likely to need a code reader. Some are cheap - for example for VAG cars you can get a cable for about £8 and a shareware software package for free that will read pretty much all codes. There are generic OBD code readers too.

The cheap readers may just do that, but they may not turn it off if the issue is resolved with replacement parts…,that’s why they are cheap…

The EML comes on randomly on my 51 plate focus. Sometimes the speedo stops working too. Sometimes the speedo will start working but the EML will come on, then for no reason at all everything works fine. I got the EML reset at my local garage the first time it happened but haven't bothered since. I give them it to sort the mot and service it and it keeps running fine.

I can now see why vehicle diag causes so many issues.

I used to daily in the last job get "the old ones are much better don't have all this electronics rubbish." The EML is telling you something is wrong or due to be wrong.
Where as the older engines run ****ty and sooty get ignored then completely fail, drivers are happy to ignore smoke or knocks but cant ignore an EML well they can until the engine is in derate mode then they will flag it

On a car I acquired recently I’ve had two check engine lights: the first had no symptoms and was a faulty lambda sensor after the catalytic converter: the second was accompanied by terrible misfiring and vehicle recovery. It was fixed by ignition coil pack replacement. So you can go from one extreme to the other with one light.

It simply means that the ECU has flagged a fault - without reading the code it is impossible to say what it will or won't be, and pointless to speculate as it could be anything.
If there was some obvious symptom which accompanied it you could take an educated guess - but reading the fault code is always going to be the first step.

Once upon a time we had a late model Volvo 240 estate, nice solid car but it had an annoying habit of lighting up various engine management system lights including a triangular one known as " The Expensive light" cos if you took it to a garage it was guaranteed to cost you between 500 & 750 quid, I finally fixed it by sticking a bit of black insulating tape over it!

glad I have older cars, one has had a coolant light flashing intermittently for 10 years and the other has had one flashing intermittently for 5 years..... as long as there is warm air coming out of the heater I know its fine......but sometime I do worry it it stops flashing

Mine used to come on at the same time the car would drop into limp home mode. £35 at a garage told me it was low fuel pressure. Stoneacre apparently don't think fuel filters need changing during a full engine service.....
