ARC eye ???

They need replaced because they get too scratched to see the weld pool, not because they start letting UV light through. As most of us are tight with money, that would mean we'd all be getting arc eye every six months

As above. The lenses just get too filthy with spatter to see through clearly. I don't think you have problems with arc eye by using worn out lenses.

You can wash them by coating both sides with washing up liquid and rubbing it in with your fingers then rinsing off. It helps a bit, sometimes.

Basically they don't cost much and they are consumables, so you always want a few on hand.

The Rays don't even make to the adf. The clear outer lenses are made from Perspex. Arc Ray's can't travel through it. You could take the adf out altogether and (if it was possible to see) strike up with just the clear outer screen in and you won't get burnt.

so why did i never get arc eye with my old auto dark with no clear lens on the front of the adf?

Because the adf and the inner all filter the Rays. Every layer is a uv filter.

Hell fire. I've had a few red/green dots from a flash behind a lens but thank goodness never that bad. Tbh whatever the science of whether the light can or can't get through I wouldn't want to use my peepers as Guinea pigs to find out.

My son keeps welding by closing his eyes......I keep telling him not to . That is the real reason I was a decent mask to be honest...

explain to him that arc eye will generally go in time but skin cancer can kill

i have to admit ive tried a few lenses gone from the fixed lense to the grade 5 googles found it great with them now i much prefer the auto darkening helmet one of the best buys for mig welding and i use it for more than just that if i want

im still a swine with the grinding with no goggles on but ive caught way too many bounce offs that lately im using a set of all around googles to stop it even had a little piece still get within the goggles other day

so im just getting into the habit of a mask and also the goggles one to stop breathing in the dust and also specs near the eyes

Afaik the skin on your eye lids isn't enough to filter the Rays but I could be wrong.

If you've got arc eye you haven't got it looking through a welders mask despite how cheap they are the outer/inner lenses are made from Perspex and the Rays cannot penetrate Perspex. You can't get arc eye through clear safety glasses. It can travel through glass though so your every day specs won't stop it.
Point been if you've got arc eye you must of got it with the mask up.

I thought glass welding lenses had a particular type of filter glass?
UVA definitely travels through glass but i thought the harmful UVB rays did too. Could be wrong mind as the green house thing makes sense.

perhaps some have thinner eyelids? I must say sometimes at places like college etc people repeat stuff they have heard without question. whenever I did it it just sunburned my eyelids so I never made it habbit- besides I was ok with a split screen, it is a pain tacking with a had held or nodder
