They look too bright, the rods we used were like the colour of cast iron and got surface rust on them when they lay around a while, suppose they maybe were cast iron?
Right shape for cast iron welding rods but wrong colour, do they snap rather than bend? Maybe you get coated cast iron rods like copper coated mild steel gas welding rods? I don't know. Tried them with TIG ac & DC not a good idea like sparklers smoke and crap no weld

@Bsmith yes they do snap so cast seems to be the closest thing with a coating of Nickle stop rust.??
Now I need someone to want a Kg or so think they are quite old so may not be Super SG Cast rods for TIG & gas they did not preform with TIG for me, could they be gas rods only??

Had to repair a vice at work before Christmas after it cracked it half after trying to undo a couple of rusty pipe fittings using 24" stilsons.
Not the prettiest of repairs but it's been put through its paces and holding up ok.
Used some 7018 rods. V-d out the crack and heated it up with a blowtorch first then while building up the layers of weld used a heat gun to keep the temperature up. Once finished welding I wrapped it in some old towels and left it to cool slowly.

Grind down the weld and add a welded strap across each side, for further support/strength, is my suggestion. That is how I repaired a vise that was used for years, before being replaced by a better one.
