Thinking of hardwiring my comp into the shed.Its a 30 metre run from fuse board to shed.Can anyone tell me if 1.5mm armoured cable is up to the job,and what other stuff I need for the task.

1.5mm is to small without the full information needed I would say 4mm would be fine. You will also need swa glands for it cw20 is what you need

If it's a compressor of any size, no it won't. You'd be looking at 6 or even 10mm cable to do the job halfway properly.

Have a look at the data plate on compressor to find out power requirements then use this handy calculator

Got no data plates on it bud, just told by previous owner its 3 HP.

When you say 6-10mm,what is it exactly you go buy, is it the overall thickness of the cable or the individual coloured wires,as the 1.5mm says its rated at 600-1000v,and 23 amps.

3 hp is about 2.2kW, putting the figures into the calculator does give 1.5mm² assuming the compressor is the only load and you don't want to run any lights.
The 6mm & 10mm etc. sizes refer to the CSA (cross sectional area) of the cores

4mm 6mm 10mm flippin eck just had to put a suply into our garage 25mm cables 45M long needed!!!
altho it is a new build and had to be up to regs

that reminds me i have to finnish fitting it never enough hours in the day

you could always put a duct in and use normal cable it may work out cheaper
than SVA stuff

Always put a bigger supply into your garage than you think you need at the moment. Lots of new toys, sorry essential "I've got to get one of those tools", out there!!

25mm cored armoured cable 45 m long (124 amps ), what are you running in there man, that's gotta be one hell of an equipped workshop.

The idea of putting "normal stuff" down a outside duct is not a good one

It is permissible though, is it not? Omitting the possible effect of wildlife on cables, the ducting fulfils the requirement of a cable being protected from wear, abrasion, accidental damage etc?

Would have to look really carefully at impact requirements for cable system external especially if it was to be buried plus the requirements for draw in points every 3m to prevent cable damage during install then keeping water out is very hard singles would be more costly than swa as they come in 100m rolls t+e is very hard to pull in over any distance and conduit size would be large

You would have to go to 2.5mm² if you want to have lighting as the % volt drop is too much on 1.5mm²

nymj is the preferred cable(after swa of course) if running it underground in a duct.rats dont like it.pvc is delicate.

i dont think its practical to feed any garage with anything less than 2.5mm.30 metres of a run isnt anything major though

Do you reckon I can still get away with running 1.5mm,as I'm not going to be using light or sockets any way when compressor is on.

How big is the compressor? The price difference is small between the small cables

2.2kw so run 2.5mm.its not worth the hassle to skimp on size
