When I was at collage 20 years ago..we were taught both up and down on 5 mm plate..they then stuck ya work piece in a machine a bent it until it snapped. .it had to pass a certain point without snapping..on all three processes. .even to this day I sometimes struggle with stick v up and down depending .is shocking the amount of crap welding out there can't help noticing even when im stuck in traffic and lorrys go past im looking at welds lol. i went somewhere the start of the month for welding assesment when i was talking to instructor about vert up he said just do it downhill that was on 10mm plate so not surprised really if thats what people are getting taught
I hate it when you read people stating that their welding "isn't pretty but is strong".
