I find coarse steel wool and jizer or wd40 great for cleaning off rust and thats what i used when i got my old milling machine. Gunsmiths use a wheel called a carding wheel for cleaning rust off guns when bluing them, very fine wire in them.

I had one of those soft wire wheels they work wonders. When I got a lathe with surface rust I used green scotchbrite and wd40 which did a great job. Since then I have learned that a flat carbide scraper will scrape rust off clean without marring the surface of the ways so that's what I use now.

The wire wheel was similar to this one http://www.grainger.com/product/DEWALT-Crimped-Wire-Wheel-Brush-4KZ66?s_pp=false also got a wire wheel in the bench grinder just wear safety glasses all the time as some of the bristles fly off and stick in you clothes stand to one side of the bench grinder so they don't hit your face

I decided to keep the old switches but put a new rotary switch for the motor and used the others on a 12volt system to be safe

Kept the old lamp but its now a safe 12volt system

All this came out of the gearbox its all soft so no damage

Ewww, someone went a bit OTT with the liquid sealant. I would expect a paper gasket to be more than adequate.

yes that's what I was thinking it must be about 2 mm thick going to my local motor factors tomorrow to see what they have

You can buy gasket paper in wide rolls but I'm afraid I don't know where from. I had a large piece some time back, but all I have are a4-sized stuff now.

a cornflake box or a larger cardboard box is all thats needed

Instead of a cereal box with a shiny surface use good, thick paper/thin card. Folder dividers tend to be ideal.
If you then coat it with Blue Hylomar it'll probably be leak free 'til long after you're gone.

I think I used Wellseal on my Student - Lotus recommend it for the 900-series twincam so it should be good enough

Pizza Boxes are perfect for this job; Morrisons don't have a gloss face either.

I got a large roll of 1mm gasket paper and some good gasket sealer made for car sumps it went well but just a pity the sealer is black

I also think the original gasket may have been cork

For the original gasket material I would expect it to be either cork or asbestos rope. No, really! My 70's bungalow has soffits made in hard asbestos which will soon be replaced with less hazardous materials. I'm expecting to see men dressed in space suits doing the job in a couple of weeks or so.
