Have you ever tried one of the mini cordless saws?
I've used my little Stihl for up to 3-4" stuff, and it chomps through it perfectly fine. No where near as fast a decent sized saw, but it does the job, so I'd hardly call it rubbish.

I swing from the bottom up, havent thrown a chain yet.What diameter stems?
Hedges anything less than 1" gets loppers, hedges are a sod for throwing chains of the bar.

tight conifers and hawthorns on an ms200 not at all uncommon, Baby echo doesn't suffer it though

I recently bought a Bamse 8” battery chainsaw off Amazon. Amazing bit of kit for the price. Comes with 2 batteries, charger, small bottle of chainsaw oil, spare chain. Did the job on a 20’ leylandii in super quick time and cut off all the branchy bits before shredding.

Yes, I also have a baby 4" Katsu saw, which I got an 8" bar for. Same idea as the GTA26, same 1/4" pitch chain except mine uses 20v instead of 12v, so has more power. I burnt the motor out after abusing it on 8-10" limbs.

Avoid the Stihl, it’s a bit rubbish, they really can’t compete with established power tool makers in this area, no oiler seems crazy from such a well regarded manufacturer.
I went for the Makita simply as I have their other versions and more of their batteries than any other. It’s a decent little tool, good life on a 6Ah battery.
Might just be me but I have the pro silkies and I damn sure I can’t do it quicker with one of them.

Yes it is, it’s not lacking power for the size that’s for sure, same as the top handle. The normal, rear handle saw is the only one that really needs a little more guts.
Im really hoping Makita do a twin XGT 80V saw that will compare to a 70cc saw then I will replace my huskies.
Interesting post, just pushed the button on purchasing a Ryobi 8” battery chainsaw as I was already bought into the platform. I bought a similar pole saw a few weeks ago and seems ok. Ryobi seem to have an offer on, bare tool was £130ish, £139 gets you a saw, 2.5ah battery and charger plus a free extra bare tool from a limited selection. If anyone is suckered into the Ryobi platform maybe worth a look.
If anyone is interested I’ll let you know what the saw is like when it arrives but unlikely to get used often.

I guess if you want Rolls Royce, then it will have to be Stihl or Husqvarna, and their prices.
We have got a Box hedge about 30m long, and 6 to 7 ft high, plus trees, and I bought an Einhell 18 volt long handled telescopic thing from Toolstation. It has a hedgetrimmer head, and a swappable chainsaw head. Its not brilliant, but its not bad either. Obviously not a patch on the aforementioned, and nowhere near as powerful as mains or petrol, but it does the job adequately for the price.
A cheap battery one is handy to keep in the van, in case one spots some logs while out and about.

Pic from few days ago... The Katsu will cut 10" logs easily and full charge is not much slower than petrol but the twin battery version would give much longer cutting. An old 4Ah Lidl battery will get about 8 cuts of this size, or probably about 200 cuts of 2" - so perfect for climbing on smaller trees.
I really want to find a 1/4" pitch sprocket as the other chains need much less cutting power. It also could use slower gearing.
The sprocket is slightly annoying to make as it has a bore with driving flats, so not simple to convert another sprocket. Most electrics seem to be the same.
There's a Leylandii in the New Forest Rhinefield Ornamental Drive Arboretum that was planted when they first imported them that's 150Ft tall and 50 ft diameter and still going.
Leylandii is not for hedging.
Don't forget they don't sprout shoots from brown wood so it'll look like Friar Tucks head for ever from above.
If you want a 6ft hedge consider laurel, £15+ per plant in a pot for mugs or a bin liner full of 12" cuttings from the park for nothing stuck in the ground. Does take an extra year to grow to the same size but I had 75% live

Thanks for info but I'm afraid it's a bit too late ,actually 48 years too late . I did realise it will look like a Friars head it did last time I gave it a severe talking too but as it's not ornamental but just a way of keeping the riff raff in it will do.

From memory I can't say that I've noticed the sprocket is easily removable, but then I've never tried.
I'll check it later when I'm back outside, as I need to give the chain a quick lube for tomorrow's project.
