Am I the only one here who can see what's right in front of your eyes? Can someone explain how welding distortion can bend it one way AND the other? Or do you just not see it?
Perhaps I have superhuman abilities but that Z bend is really obvious to me. It's bent one way one one side and the other way on the other. Entirely consistent with being crushed in transit.
I mean, that is just the tip of the base mounting lug, the rest of the entire assembly is also similarly distorted, consistent with it being crushed.

What is clear is that the upright was welded at a jaunty angle to the base plate, regardless of why or how the s bend got into the base plate.@Maker, you'll have to explain to me what you're laughing at here. Can you not see the Z bend?

I’d not put it past the idea that the left side was welded, it pulled, and was then given a mighty great whack with a hammer to send it back somewhere near where it should be. Thus giving the downward bend on that side.
I’ve seen the guys who make this sort of thing, finesse and pride are words not in their vocabulary.

Disagree, the rest of the thing is perfectly good and useable. The slightly shorter version is £30 and works perfectly once the feet are fixed, which on mine I have not yet bothered.
Mine is welded near enought to 90 degrees but still has the slight S bend on the feet.
Of more functional concern is to add a length of angle steel and fence 90 degrees to the blade for proper cut alignment - as without it these type of shears will always give a wonky cut.
I will dig mine out and get a better photo tomorrow .

You can pick up a good quality used shear for £25 to £30 pounds without looking too hard. Know where I'd spend my money.
Sounds like we have the same one (200mm?). Like I said, I open the vice enough to drop the shears in down to its thru-bolts & clamp it up. Holds it rock steady.
I haven't added a fence etc.
I find it cuts pretty square with a bit of care starting off - once it's got enough sheet through the body, it tends to guide it through pretty well.
Mine though always catches the sheet as it gets past the jaws, & I have to push the cut side down a bit to stop the snag & ease the sheet past that point, after which it slides through OK

Ok so let me get this straight.
To account for the current condition of that item your story is:
The parts from which it was fabricated were already bent
These were then welded to the main body badly out of square but precisely aligned with the preexisting bend
The weld caused a further distortion not to the pre bent part but only to the last remaining straight bit
The item was then struck by a hammer in order to get the thing back into square (while clearly failing to do so)
Yeah ok. I'm going to go with "got bent during shipping".
If we're allowed to make up any story we like, I'd much prefer "glancing blow from a meteorite" because it requires fewer implausible events to occur so sequentially. It also accounts for the bend in the rest of the item which your story does not.

If you’re that desperate to prove it was an immaculate precision fabrication when shipped, but bent in transit then yes, go with the meteorite story.

We shall check the replacement item before dispatching to make sure it is well welded. DPD Service working hours are Mon-Fri from 9:00 till 17:00, and it is hard to give them a specific time for collection, however, you can mention a safeplace to leave the item at, and we can mention this.
Awaiting your reply".
I wrote back and said to please check not only that it's well welded but welded square! I offered to tape it all up and leave ready for DPD to collect the next day but they've yet to come back to me. Also asked if I they will send a shipping label. Chased them this morning.

I have no idea why it concerns me at all really but I got a bee in my bonnet and I just have to.
I simply cannot accept this item was so badly welded out of square using bent, deformed parts AND THEN went through the process of painting AND THEN assembly before being packaged without anyone else noticing the entire thing is bent. Plus it then needs an essay on how each step of the fabrication got so many individual processes wrong to account for the multiple points of failure.
Rather than accept that when you ship a heavy item half way around the world in ten ton pallets, sometimes they get squashed...

I’m not sure at what point you decided I said the bracket was ‘bent and deformed’ before it was welded?
My simple theory:
1, Straight bracket welded on, on the skunt.
2, Hammer blow, bending said bracket.
3, Other side of bracket welded, pulling the other bend in.
Job done, painted, wrapped, shipped.
Nobody in paint, inspection or quality control seemed to be bothered about the gaping triangular space in the middle of the T.

Well with any luck, the OP will get the supplier to 'fess up and we'll find out if it was damage in shipping or Jackanory.

Well DPD collected the naff one yesterday. The supplier emailed me:
"Thank you for getting back to us again.
A replacement item has been placed in order to be received within 2-3 working days.
Please feel free to contact us if not received on time.

Well angry doesn't really do it!
Just gotten around to unboxing the replacement bench shear. It's made more pi$$ed than the first!
Plus wtf does "400mm" mean when it only appears to have a useable cutting throat depth of 300mm?
Even the bottom blade isn't parallel to the blue frame though I might be able to loosen the bolts and adjust.
It's just good materials used badly. No QA/QC to speak of. On a wider note this is where we are. All our manufacturing tech gone abroad, we can't resist buying cheap etc. Should I be surprised?
Tempted to grind the base plates off and re-weld square. I don't know if I've the energy to complain again. Gobsmacked that the ("clearly of foreign descent") contact couldn't grasp the original issue and that they sent me something out that's has the same issue but worse. They're not proper engineering suppliers just purveyors of cheap Chinese tat.
