Personally I think they are about the worst shape of insert, no back clearance and swarf easily gets trapped marring the surface. Just my opinion of course.

Remember folks, unless you have a rigid and powerful machine, you don't want to go with negative rake holders so stay away from cnmg, wnmg.

I went with all cnmg inserts... because they weren't too expensive and I found a selection of holders pretty easily...
they're a kind of rhombus shape... nearly all the tools use the point, but I picked up a few that use the other two corners to get the most use out of the tips..
but... I hardly do any lathe work so I only use a couple of tips a year max... so it didn't really make any difference

in my experience... the difference is shocking
my lathe is big/heavy which I guess helps a lot
but last time I used it with HSS I was struggling to remove metal, struggling to keep it cool, having to be very careful
(working stainless)
I switched to carbide and it was totally different, it was like you see on tv/youtube, taking out loads of metal with ease, chunky ships, big curls springs etc.

I tend to use negative rake tools but the machine is fairly solid generally you will get a better finish with neg rake tools especially if they include a wiper which basically rubs after the cut to shiney it up but I still use a lot of hss and generally they are better if you are creeping up on a dimension but if getting carbide stuff get good quality branded some of the cheap stuff is softer than good cobalt hss I tend to get sandvik although I have had good results from jb cutting tools stuff

I am similar on the manual lathe although on the CNC I much prefer a DNMG rather than the CNMG, in fact I probably would use DNMG on the manual as well but the only PDJN* holders I have are all left hand ones and I have a load of CNMG inserts anyway

Well the only reason I am bothering to try carbide is I have read a lot of good reviews about the cheap chinese stuff so to me it seemed worth a try. If I were to have to invest a lot of money into this I would rather stick to HSS tooling to be honest.
My HSS tooling as of this moment is cheap chinese stuff too. Not sure if that is also a place where I would be better served with some brand name stuff?
I bought most of my tips on ebay, half boxes etc. they look legit, from places selling a lot of stuff like that

I grabbed on of these WNMG8040 off of ebay last year as I was not happy with the finish i was getting from the CNMG stuff. Wow, what an improvement. Its now my goto tool whenever possible. I am running a 1440 lathe and 20mm is about as big as it can take but as long as you crank the speed up the finish is excellent.
I just had a quick look, I think 16mm is the smallest for those inserts.
