Best Linesman / Combination pliers

Looks like some oddball pliers on your bench, what do you do?

I've just had a quick tot up, I've got at least 40 pairs across the drawers of tools I actually use, probably about as many again in my big cantilever toolbox of duplicates at spares.

Hi , the ones on the bench are spec frame adjusting pliers , a few parallel jaws and some are for adjusting nose pads and the likes , Ive about another half dozen pairs in a drawer for doing rimless glasses too , I should have dug them out ,, one of the oddest pairs pf pliers I have are the same as these in the picture ,,,, but do you know what they do

Apart from replacing about three screwdrivers and a stabbed thumb of course lol

Lol ,, ,even I thought 30 pairs was ridiculous ,, so I checked my main box , and the bench

without going to the other two or three boxes I have ,,, I made it to about 70 pairs ,,,

Which handles do you prefer. Is the big plastic handles more comfortable for heavy use but clumsy for normal use?

I actually prefer the slim plain plastic handles for most things as they just seem to give more feel for the job , especially on small fine things ,, I dont mind the bigger handles for bigger jobs , as long as they are the hard plastic ones , I really dont like any handles with the soft grip bit in them , be it pliers or screwdrivers they just always seem to be grubby , even after a wipe with gods own juice ,, the elixir of life for all things mechanical [acf50] they seem to be black and horrid before they make it back to the box ,,,

I only bought them about a year ago , a ten quid buy from flea bat ,, but ive wrestled with those things for thirty years or more ,,, now I can wheek them in and out in an instant , I dont have any to do ,,, but Ive still had a practice , boys they are great ,,,, keep an eye open and you too may own a pair , its sort of one of those amaze your friends and amuse your family things ,,, but what a crowd pleaser the day you produce them.

I like project farm on youtube for advice on stuff like that. Everybody claims their brand is best but project farm gives them a good test beside the other good brands. In the combination pliers test he didn't have snap on but he still recommended knipex as best.
He did have snap on in the side cutters test though and they were very poor compared to the other top brands. Again knipex came out good and for cheap cutters just as good was irwin and klein. Snap on was probably worst for performance compared to cost.

I have found snap on side cutters to be excellent for maybe a month or two then they lose their edge, they are pretty much only used for cable ties.

I use the long reach ones and have found them to be pretty good ,,, but I dont abuse them ,, I think a lot of folk expect side cutters to be bolt cutters , and they are not. the trouble is the long reach handles give you huge leverage as well as reach ,,, then it just gets tempting ,,,, just this once ,,, maybe ,,, oops lol

Klein make the Snap-on Linesman pliers and I have both, they are identical in every way.

cos I liked them when I couldnt afford them ,,, now I can I just have them because I can ............. do I feel guilty ,,,

The Marvel (Japan) ones are supposed to be quite good too, if you can find a reseller over here.
I am curious to know where the info comes on the knipex not being up to snuff? - I hadn't really seen anything bad said about them. Mine are fine so far, but I don't use them that much to be honest.

I'm still using my dads Lucas Elliot 2169-8 pliers - they were certainly well used by him when I was a small kid . . . I'm 52 now and I've had them 37 yrs . . . serrations in the flat part of the jaw well worn, but still work freely and easily - only real damage is the end of the one of the red handle coverings has always been split.

Probably useless info for anyone wanting a new pair though - no idea if they still make them.

They got taken over by Spear & Jackson I think.

I am not certain and don't quote me but I think I bought mine on Amazon in the US as they were not available in the UK at that time.

What even down to the snap On logo? them 6 letters are worth at least a tenner each!

They appear to be more expensive than snap on, 55 quid for a pair of side cutters plus the vat!
