But why should I, the law is the law! I don't make the laws.
I have also have a 7.5ton truck with a spec lift which is MOT exempt.
I also have taken part in the five days of driver training (which bored me to death).
I am operating within the law (which is more than some people).
I have put allot of effort and money into having all our work vehicles legal.
And Vosa still keep giving me stick on the roadside.
I am very touchy on this subject. Annoys me no end.
Everyday I see self-employed people breaking the rules (truthfully just earning a living).

I take your point and you shouldn't have to, but add up the cost of a few lost hours and it would pay you to have one in the end

When I have to drive about with a folder with the law printed off and laminated to show roadside enforcement officers. It is a crying shame!

By the same token would you advise me to MOT test (plate) my MOT exempt spec lift truck even thou we have it on six weekly inspection?

the problem with law is, its not written in plain and simple terms and many police officers interpret them in their own way, each being different so its the law makers at fault for the way its written down

To be honest, doing light recovery and transporting vehicles for a repairing garage is not worth it.
The best game plan is to pay someone else to do it!
Doing anymore than local "drawbar recovery" for a broken down car with a 4x4 is just too much hassle of late.
The problem with my trade is, the major recovery services break the law daily doing light recovery and get away with it.

American electric brakes work like this:
Inertia brake controller sits on the dash, has a solid state accelerometer inside and a Pwm high current drive output based on deceleration and the gain adjustment knob (stops the trailer locking up when empty)...
The trailer hubs use an electromagnet that is wedge shaped, it pulls itself towards the iron brake drum, the wedge expands inside the shoes forcing them outwards. Other types are available.
They work in reverse (reversing heavy boat down slipway) and you can hit the 'brake' button on the controller to brake the trailer independently, to pull a snake into a straight line. Advanced controllers plug into the obd port and will interface with he vehicle abs, when that is activated, it will also pulse the trailer brakes to stop them locking up.
Breakaway works with a small battery in a box on the trailer.

Hi, I also was led to believe they're not legal over here. I didn't know how they worked specifically, but reading that I can see why they aren't. They aren't a fail safe system because they need a working battery on the trailer to apply the brakes in a breakaway scenario. An air system trailer with spring brakes would apply the brakes in the event of loss of air.

They don't use breakaway cables, they use bloody great chains, so the plan is to not have the thing breakaway in the first place.
Battery is charged from the towing vehicle, can't see that being a problem personally? I'd happily run with them.

The thing is no issues just means that you have been lucky & not stopped not that it is legal.
If you have BE then its legal anyway. If you only have B then its illegal. It is that simple.
For under 100km radius he wont need a tacho if its his own goods. If its customers goods or courier / haulage then going 1 foot needs a a tacho.
He also need an O licence for the van / trailer combo.

I may be in a similar situation being a self employed builder re tacho, o licence etc... So I looked into it and found out how much it'll cost and keep costing! No wonder lots don't do it. It's always the same though, you have to have all sorts of licences and tickets and they all cost hundreds each, then you get teachers or civil servants on £50k a year thinking I'm dick Turpin charging them £150 a day to fix the roof on their £400k house!!
at the very least all these necessary licences/tickets should be sorted by the government agency at cost price, then maybe more people would comply with them!
an example:
A few years ago my labourer and I had to do a PASMA (allows erection of aluminium access tower) course for a contract I got. It cost £400 for both of us. When we turned up on the day there was 16 of us in total so £3200 all in for the training company. We spent half a day basically being shown the instructions by a 20 year old then had a half hour lunch break then split into teams of two for the practical, putting the tower up, then taking it down. All over by 2 o clock. I feel it was massively overpriced but there's nothing you can do about it. My asbestos wareness course was exactly te same. Rant over!

the funnyest one i've ever done with a trailer was towing a plant trailer with a minitractor on it.
i hadn't been dribeing that long then, and most people didn't know about B+E then nor chould you do the test anywhere. but i got pulled over by the minestry
they were going to make me leave the trailer with the minitractor on it there just outside gloster.
there was a bit of argueing about but it's garantted to have been nicked by the time i get back and how that would be my problem. tho my proposed solution was to unload the bobcat, hitch the trailer up to the minitractor and leave the transit there to come back for / or if the weights worked out legal put the transit on the trailer.
they did agree that it would be legal ( because tractor )
