Best way to implement a load bearing post

The old one is made out of rafters screwed together and has lasted 40 years plus. I'm looking for a quick and easy solution.

Well then just use 100mm X 100mm (4 x 4 treated fencing post)..job done for a tenner

cut off level(cutting out rot) make a box a few rebars and cement after dry bolt the wood to the cement

Use up a pretty good amount of real estate that way.....

For all you "steel posters", how about just timber cladding one of the acrows.

I could possibly find some of them from 40 years ago : I haven't heard of anything falling down yet !

Another vote for a concrete repair.

Cut rotten part of post off
Wind in half a dozen big screws into the underside of the cut off post.
Dig a few inches of the concrete out at the base of the post.
Form shuttering around existing post and include a fill hole.
Fill with wet concrete, gently tap shuttering to get the air out of the concrete.
Allow to set for a few days
Remove shuttering.
Change out of a tenner.

I really can't think there's any noticeable difference in load bearing capacity in your situation between one single post or 4 fixed together. If you go with 4 then I'd suggest gluing them before screwing them. PVA will be perfectly fine or some dedicated wood glue from Screwfix either way it's never coming apart!

if you dont want to shell out just use the acro and a wooden pannel on the face of the garage

does pva not emulsify when it get wet

id go for exterior glue if going that way

I am somewhat surprised that this far in, noone has suggested dismantling the whole garage and rebuilding 3 inches further back. ... with a new post of course.

I think 4" x 4" would be a bit spindly to act as a load bearing column that's taking ~1/4 of the load on the roof. (Just look at the size of the beam it would be holding up.)

Max slenderness ratio for load bearing timber columns is 180 (so 1.8m max length for a 4" x 4"), but that doesn't take into account what the loads actually are, or the timber strength grade.

I'd go with something to match the size of what's there now.

Went digging round in the shed this morning and found this 200x100 block. So the plan is, cut off the bottom of the existing post, concrete in a steel base, splice in this offcut and put a steel/ply plate on each side to get back to the full width and bolt each section together.
