Beware the mot tester

As it’s all digital now enforcement is like shooting fish in a barrel.

All they need to do is write some code that looks for oddities like that.

HMRC do the same sort of thing I think.

You can’t aim it at an individual without a warrant but you can look for anomalies. Ie cars last known to fail on an isle and then pass 300 miles away all in the same place

I'm not sure it's worth nothing, but I've a tray in my printer loaded with blank MOT certificates.

It used to be like that and if you knew the right garage they'd do them by post.

Local garage here lost his MOT status for testing cars in absentia. DVSA was outside when he did one and nobbled him for it.

My brother who lives in the U.K. said the other day a car with an MOT is worth nothing, as you can buy a blank MOT certificate, cheaper than passing a MOT.

Don't know whether this is true though.

Back when I was working in London in 91/2, a proper MOT was a tenner . . . a bent one was £25.

With it all computerised these days, the paper copy is simply for your records - Police etc simply look it up.

As of last year in France, any rust is a fail, any original part missing is a fail, anything which doesn't work is a fail, yeah great, buy a new car, but I can't afford one, and I like keeping old vehicles running, not having a go at you @Erie Fred , but its got stupid over here recently, they just want old cars off the roads.

Really? Since when? In my experience, they're not entirely different to the UK, rust itself is an advisory, as long as not holes .. in which case it's classed as a major, and automatically failed, but surface rust is advisory, or minor..

I have a niva 4 X 4 for the chasse, and it's had a hard life, mechanically sound because I keep it that way, but don't worry too much about body work..... especially with the dogs in the back, so at best body wise, it would be classed as cosmetically challenged, rust spots galore, but no holes, passed first time, each time, with the same advisories, rust and vague steering, but they all do that sir...

No problems... Frankly I don't really see any significant difference between the contrôle technique and a UK MOT... Pretty much the same for me...

Really? Since when? In my experience, they're not entirely different to the UK, rust itself is an advisory, as long as not holes .. in which case it's classed as a major, and automatically failed, but surface rust is advisory, or minor..

Yes, rust 'perforant', ie with holes.

Can't comment on UK MOT standards, it's been 22 years.

Just seems to be getting a bit anal / extreme over here.

bent MOTs cost more than a legit one!

Honestly, not that Ive seen, the guy who normally does ours is pretty strict and I prefer that, as you know the real craic, especially for the family car / van..
We have a different tester for the 4*4 as it's LPG, so there's only a few centres that are licensed for them, same standard + specifics for the tank and safety valves etc strict and straight, so no mates rates there...
Have been using the same guys for +25 years, and can't say I've seen any difference recently..

I've been using the same place for years too, they're fair, will go into the pit with you, and show you what you need to do, even spot the bits with a can of aerosol paint. I thoroughly respect them, and use them reguarly.

How small does a Scottish Island have to be to be exempt from MOT testing (without a testing station I would think?)

Rhum was mot exempt but there was a talk of the council taking over responsibility for the main and only road on the island which would mean everyone would have had to have Mots and pay road tax. Don’t know if it ever happened was last there when I was 10.

used to be the way ,,, mt over the phone etc ,,, those days have mostly gone ,,,
here in northern ireland its big test centers , like hgv in england , and its going to get a lot tighter shortly. Its a fair ish system but some days you do wonder .

Mainland Orkney isn’t exempt, neither is Mainland Shetland but the outer isles are exempt.

Some of the western isles are also. It’s wether the ferry goes direct or round the houses if there’s no road bridge.

Ie I can get a direct ferry to Scrabster. If I lived on Hoy I would have to get a ferry to mainland Orkney, then a second boat to mainland UK hence Hoy is exempt.

Usual rules of insurance and road worthiness are supposed to apply but they don’t
