I saw a carbon frame fail once. Matey built his own carbon frame for his recumbent. Toured europe, raced it etc etc. I was on a group ride with a bunch of recumbentists in the Cotswolds. Just been down one of them mega 50mph downhills. Parked outside the corner shop. He got back on his bike, clicked back into his pedal, and 'KLICKSNAP' (onomateopiea) ( if I spelled that right I get a medal) his frame shattered, he was left with the bottom bracket clipped to his foot and shards of carbon all over the place.
Stuff that.
Off course they may have sorted that carbon stuff these days.
The failure mode is spectacular.

I'm in the middle of trying to figure out what to do about holding and notching the the back end. All sorts of head aches. Also found out my front triangle is very very wonky... Tacked and welded it up without a jig though, so not really surprised.

Do you think you will get away with cold setting it before you weld. I only tack in the jig and it seems to stay very striaght after welding.
This is how I've done a back end before.
I use the same dummy rear axel on both the main jig as well as this simple jig for tacking and mitering the chain stays. When the chain stays are mitered the dummy axel is transferred back to the main jig and the chain stays tacked to the BB. The seat stays are the worst bit, I hand file to fit and get my girlfriend in to hold them in place while I tack, only problem is she panics when the welder starts up so the last lot came out a bit on the p**s.

Weather has just been to good for garage work so I didnt get much done this long weekend.
Chain stay to rear dropout, fit up not so easy when you have to file to fit.
Chain stays welded to dropouts. Not pretty but good enough.
Mitreing chain stays to bottom bracket.
Fit up a lot easier when you rely on a machine.
Bending up seat stays next and making a jig to miter them. The end is in sight.

Bit more work on the backend.
Trial fit of part of the seat stay wishbone, large plastic disc is a dummy tyre to make sure I have mud clearance.
Cut to length and end finished to same angle as seat tube.
Slightly over size patch cut so I can cap the end.
Capped and filed.
All tubes need vent holes but I hate the way rust bleeds from these vents so I turned up a brass top hat and silvered it in.

Next on the list is bending up the seat stays.
A rough sketch was made and a few trial bends done in 15mm copper before I committed to steel.
Small rad bender with stop set at 90 deg.
First bend finished, there quite a bit of spring back in the steel but its not to dissimilar to the trial copper bends.
Marking the position of the reverse bend from the sketch.
Larger rad bender loaded with the seat stay.
Stop set to 40 deg for the reverse bend.
Finished pair of seat stays.

Its going to be a single speed mountain bike but I will run cable guides so I can convert to a hub gear as well. The intention is to replace my current ride to work bike with this one so I need it to be as winter proof as possible.

Amazing work, I dont think have the energy to be so thorough.
Single speed mountain bikes? that is a thing I do not understand. I have a bunch of mates who swear by them one even makes a living selling them. But they all seem to spend ages pushing them up hills. And fannying about with the drive train.
Have I missed the point?
