New design, had some hydraulic ram that I fished out of a skip, 41.something diameter which is a bit small for a hammer normally.

Stripped the chrome plating off in an acid bath outside, and stuck it in the forge. This is where I am at now after upsetting both ends to about 60mm round and reducing the length from 13cm to 10cm, then punching the hole with a slot punch (by hand! Normally I would use the fly press). I have just started drifting it in this photo.

And a nice clean slug from the punching

Thanks!. I should have a bunch of photos on a backup drive from my old computer. When I have a bit of time, I'll connect it up and see what I can find.
By the way, I like the ring roller you made. I can think of numerous occasions in the past when it would have come in handy. I'm off now to work on our old house for the rest of the afternoon.

Had a couple of hours this afternoon on the hammer, getting close now. Going to do a bit of grinding to refine it and dress the faces properly and then into heat treat. I squared off the faces because I prefer a square faced hammer to use the edges as a peen.

Made a spoon/ scoop this morning while I was making a hammer. Started with 12mm square, upset the end a bit and drew out the handle.

And the hammer, a 3lb cross pein now on its way to its new owner

Lovely hammer, I know the shaft blackening serves a purpose but I really don't like it! Much prefer a grimey wood one.. *awaits sniggers*

Yeah, I do agree with you actually! My main hammer has a charred handle and it really does make it more grippy though. Most of my others are just plain oiled wood but when they don't get used a lot it doesn't matter so much.

I like a hammer with a dark wood handle, luckily I picked up 5 at a car boot last week, 50p each

Boring. Another 3lb rounding hammer on its way out today.

Unfortunately I don't seem to have any spare time to start doing more interesting stuff. Garden gate to do next week then maybe it will quieten down during the winter months and I can get on with some new ideas. Christmas stuff needs doing too.

New hammer completed to be posted today, 2.5lb cross pein for a customer who had a 2.5lb rounding hammer off me last year. Happy with this one

I have managed to break my fly press though so I may be held up a bit now... the bronze? nut in the casting is damaged I think, it's been well worn since I got it but now it's too jerky to control. Im looking for an 8 ton now, should make my life a bit easier with double the force. I use it for pretty much every stage from squaring up the billet, punching the hole, setting the fullers and drawing out the pein if there is one.

Having moved exactly the same thing around the re-work department. They handle like a bucket of jelly! Get it off the stand and bolt it down to a pallet. The handle should just lift off, same with the ball weights.

He didn't want to put a piece of ply over the pallet and bolt it on unfortunately. Although I think it's only half size now

A half pallet refers to the height and weight. A 120x100 pallet is still a half if under 1m high and under 500kg. A common mistake which often sees people attacking a good pallet with a chainsaw
It is only on international freight that you can save money with a smaller pallet!
Laid down is fine as long as nothing sticks through the pallet.
