Earlier in the week I reported that rear footwell carpet was under about 30mm of water, I had acquired a mobile fish tank.
Internet suggested a door vapour barrier or a yellow grommet in the bulk head. My stubby torx screwdriver required to remove the cover in the engine bay arrived so I opted to remove this as it’s much easier than taking the door card off.
Removing the cover I find this
Behind this I removed three cup fulls of rotting leaf debris before I could see the yellow grommet. Didn’t take photos as my hands were covered in crud. Said yellow grommet had a similar tide mark and the drain hole was fully blocked.
That’s all been cleaned up and drain hole roded through. I’m still debating if I should remove the grommet as there’s hardly any access so will be a bitch to put back in
Inside the car I’ve unbolted the passenger seat and removed a large amount of trim. Life would be easier to remove the seat but this requires unplugging the air bag. Phoned a mate, he said don’t as there’s a good chance computer will say no when I start the car, he has the fancy gadget required to reset car but it ain’t happening.
Inside the car the foam sound deadening under the carpet is dripping saturated, I must have squeezed out around 4 litres of water and it’s still coming. Anyway it looks like this
Car is now in a state of dismantle with doors open, hopefully the wind blowing through will dry it out then I’ll attack it with a hair dryer to dry out the loom. Only money spending required will be a replacement speaker under the passenger seat. The cone is mush
The problem is a panel on the scuttle below the screen. The little grill in the recess allows leaves through into a secondary cavity where they block a drain hole and overwhelm the grommet, which is there to block a hole for the not required LHD steering column. Pic of where the leaves enter.
So applying incident evaluation analysis.
Immediate cause : water inside car
Underlying Cause: water ingress through grommet / blocked drain hole
Root Cause: ingress of leaves through the pesky grill that end up blocking drain hole
So to prevent this happening again there are two fixes.
1 - drill drain holes at the lowest point of the panel in photo 1, this will prevent build up of water, will allow drainage into the engine bay and won’t overwhelm the stupid grommet
2 - make and fit a fine mesh grill over the plastic grill shown in photo 3, this will prevent leaves getting in and blocking the drain hole
Also every couple of months remove panel in engine bay, inspect / clean
And remove leaves from the pockets that the bonnet struts collapse into
The might BMW defeated by leaves from a willow tree, bloody stupid engineering
