Had the airbag light thing on a VW...forgot to disconnect the battery first and unplugged the seat and airbag clips....it does work if you disconnect the battery first...you just have to remember to plug the seat back in before reconnecting the power!
btw, once the seat is unplugged and you trip the airbag code, unhooking the battery and plugging the seat in DOES NOT work. You need the special code eraser.

Get a Land Rover instead - they inherently leak so you're sorted.
In fact some reputable sources (Royal Marines) didn't think they leaked enough so made modifications to ensure they leaked even faster.
There is a reason behind their madness - Land Rovers are actually quite light so tend to float before they fill up with enough water and if there's a current they get blown about. So the Royal Marine ethos is to get it to fill up as quickly as possible.

Ah, the rover 75/MGZT. Yes they also suffer from this. Good car though. The cabin filter as well as the engine ecu sits in the swimming pool(sorry, scuttle), and both can suffer. The fix devised by the excellent 75/ZT forum is to drill a spy hole to enable looking in and removing said leaves with those flexi things.

Iirc, some/many of those models had BMW engines/mechanicals.
BMW's model identifiers - John Burns clarifies them in his [somewhat out of date?] website. Might be of passing interest to some, including @Parm

I do like my e91 when its running right. they have an, um, personality when things go wrong, but like a good spouse, are sometimes predictable!
an E39 or E61 is on the shopping list, its just a matter of time. (that and ill have to travel to find a clean one)...

Had the same problem on my Alfa 159 - 1/2" of water running up and down the drivers side - explained why all the windows were down on the sellers drive despite him coming to the bus station in his newer Alfa to collect me. Forum said door cards - a metal plate, carrying all the door gubbins, sealed with a rubber seal all round that perishes. Loosened them, removed the seal, replaced with dum-dum strip. Front seats out, carpets with inbuilt foam sound deadener out and squeezed and then hung up to dry.
Still happened - cleaned all drains, sealed all grommets, door switches, hinge plates . . .had it in a dark garage at night with a lamp inside, then outside, trying to find any leaks. Finally found a small area of missing seam sealant under the scuttle by tipping water on the outside and waiting for it to run inside - quite long time spent upside down watching . . .
The leaf issue - my old Alfa 75 started to make sloshing noises going around corners, then the heater fan made serious spalshing noises and threw water up the screen - blocked scuttle drains. Same with my Lancia - regular "rodding" with an old speed cable inner - once you know where to aim it, it can be done through grilles etc. Same with sun-roof drains (which in the Lancia, ended in the corners of the boot - the intention being I guess that the water ran out the boot drains close by - except they were often blocked with silt thrown up by the back wheels - extended with nylon tube through the drains) - carefully rooded with by turning a calbe inner down them - always a temptation to use compressed air, but then theres a chance of blowing the tube off the connections.
