'Cuz if it was either a different size or top entry I'd need to get adapters or whatever. I'm kinda getting closer to being on the fence between BOC and SGS as the above prices do look tempting. But BOC is literally just a few miles away and they always have the bottles I need there...

i've got a single stage regulator for top entry bottles (from when i last used boc argoshield light 20 years ago)
i'll be using this on the side entry bottle i'll be getting (as i doubt boc are cheap enough for me) the peashooter / flow regulator is on a fitting that can be loosened then moved in a 360 degree arc, so the reg and gauges sitting on their side wont be an issue,
unless your regulator's flow meter is fixed differently

i think with boc it's all these little hidden charges they keep adding,
i'm leaning towards traveling 250 miles to get some cheap gas, i could look at it that if i went with boc, i'd have to pay half my fuel costs for that 250 mile trip just to be allowed to collect a cylinder from a place 10 miles away.

I am really not sure exactly what prices the boc hobby deal is supposed to be,
i can't seem to find an official price list or how to even sign up online,
a post the other day on here suggested it'd be £52rent and £52 for gas, for argon in a Y sized bottle, plus the 16 quid collection charge, and what ever the enviromental charge is, all plus vat i imagine,
so if i could pay ~£140 with boc, that's work out ok considering i'd likely use at least 2 bottles in that year's rental time,
am i right in thinking that the boc Y sized bottles are 20 litre, and filled to 230 bar?

dang if that hasnt just thrown another variable into the equation, i think i'd be better off switching to arc welding, no need for gas bottles at all then

eBay Doncaster 2.5p/L NO DEPOSIT NO RENTAL
Hobby (9 Litre) 4.94p/L + Deposit etc...
***SGS 2.75p/L + Deposit etc...
rfg 3.45p/L + Deposit etc...
Chorley 2.00p/L + Deposit etc...
leaves one to wonder if the agent was simply double billing, covid profiteering or maybe one sandwich short of a picnic

Again are you working this out purely by cylinder capacity? If so then you need to take into account the fill pressure so that you can compare each with the actual volume of gas you get.
For example
20l @100 bar = 2m³ of gas
20l @200 bar = 4m³ of gas
20l @230bar = 4.6m³ of gas.

For your pure argon, I did some sums, and the 300 bar hobby weld 20 ltr bottle works out 3 p per litre cheaper than sgs, in a 20ltr though the initial outlay is higher. There is a depot in eastfieldscheers for that,

OK just looked at the £55 on the price list, looks like you are working out for the 10l cylinder cost so you do seem to be using the fill volume.

These cylinder pressures, contents and all that is damn confusing.
if they all filled to the same capacity it'd be easier to work out for those who are crap at maths like me,
there's so many posts on here and other welding forums about people thinking hobbyweld 9 litre bottles are the cheapest... well they are, for a reason, you are getting a lot less gas in them due to them being 137 bar fills, compared to everyone else's 10 litre 200 bar fills.
The reason i can't really use the doncaster place... well one i have an argon regulator, and don't own a co2 cylinder.. but that's not hard to fix, but it's a ~120 mile round trip, so to fill a 10 litre cylinder to 100 bar, i'd be doing that trip quite often when i am learning to tig, and whilst my time is free, and fuel costs for my car pretty cheap, it'd get very annoying to have to 'nip out' to get the cylinder filled every few feet of weld.
so i'd have to buy multiple co2 cylinders to make that work, then build a covered store for the 'spare' ones outside the shed and all that hassle.
but, say i wanted to replicate the 50 litre, 200 bar cylinder from chorley gas, cost £210 (£100 deposit, £110 gas) i'd need... 10 x 10 litre co2 cylinders from doncaster filled to 100 bar?? but that makes it £250.. just for the gas, then on top the cost of buying 10 x co2 cylinders.... please correct my crap maths here.
