so... 52 rental for the year, 52 gas fill, plus vat, £124.80... oh yeah plus the charge for the privilege of using boc and collecting a bottle from them, which is hopefully that £5.99 for the hobby user... and i guess environmental charges and any others they tack on that i'd need to opt out of like paper billing etc,
i think for my first year, boc may be the one to use then, i can see me using at least 2 bottles over that year, then i will look at the no rent deals again next year, but apart from chorley gas, it seems to get the same amount of gas as is in a boc 20 litre bottle (5 cubic meters they recon) i'd need to be spending nearer 200 quid for the first bottle, yeah sure i can get the deposit back.. but cant weld after that, so i'd still need to find £100 or so for each 20 litre refill,

If I remember correctly BOC is a two year deal, I may be mistaken, but Id check.

That's the first I have heard of it, can you check please? You should be able to return a cylinder and get a refund of remaining months at anytime.

so... that makes it £131.98 to get the gas i need to start tig welding, with what i hope to be a decent amount of gas,

Sure i won't get the £62.40 back for the rental. but if i move to a flat next year and have to stop welding for a bit, i'll get some of that deposit back, i don't expect it to be much with admin charges etc.... but right now it's the total cost of the cylinder that i have to find... what with having over spent on buying a welder, xmas coming up, on a fixed income (medically retired) and all that.

If you're seriously into Tig welding why not simply go with BOC and save no end of hassle; I initially started with Hobbyweld 9L cylinders which quickly emptied; when the third was empty and Hobbyweld agent didn't stock the 20L size I then went to BOC; Pure argon is going to be expensive wherever it's bought from and you'll drive yourself mad trying to save a few quid. I've not done much Tig aluminium welding but I've already used 3 x 9L Hobbyweld and 2 x 20L BOC cylinders; I've now got my third BOC 20L cylinder which is still full. The two lawn mower aluminium petrol tanks I finally succeed in making must be about the most expensive mower tanks in the world considering the cost of all the Tig kit and volume of pure argon I used but I think its been well worth it; I don't smoke or drink or pay to watch any sport so I don't begrudge money I spend on my hobbies
Your money so your choice; just enjoy welding whichever company you buy gas from.

Two new aluminium petrol tanks on left original steel leaking tank on right. I made just about every mistake possible but with forum members generous help and advice I got there in the end; I'm still very much a Tig novice but at least I can now make petrol tanks which don't leak.

I will be going with boc,
i don't smoke, drink, or even watch tv let alone pay for it (i watch youtube only) i have a 'subscription' for a hackspace, but that's an hour and a halfs drive away... and they don't allow any kind of welding in the space, but the laser cutter and 3d printer is what i go there for... plus they are a good bunch of guys.
Welding will only ever be a hobby for me, i have one project planned where i want to weld bits of mild steel angle and square section together, and a tig will be the best choice for that i believe,
Mig splatter alone means i'd have to do it outside the shed, which means lots of dismantling, and i won't be able to do it till spring as it's too darn cold for me to be outside for long now.. at least i have heating in the shed.
But before that project there'll be lots of tig practice.
Then i like the idea of having a tig welder around just for those occasions where i'm making something and think 'i could make this out of metal, or i could repair this if i could weld alli' i have ideas where i could use the spot weld function on the tig for a lot of things i've done in the past, and that autogenous welding thing would be more than enough to hold things together where a pop rivet or 2 would have done it before.
But that's in the future, and will be when a no rent cylinder will be the best option.

If you only wanted to weld mild steel sections Gazz292 then a cheap 140A arc welder would do this saving a considerable amount of money over using a Tig welder and having the need to use gas; however I understand your desire to have Tig welding facilities in your workshop and as such Tig will open up an whole new world of welding for you. Until this last year I've known of both Mig & Tig but never needed these only ever having welded steel for the last 55 years but when my lovely wife asked what I'd like as a prezzie for my birthday and wedding anniversary I chose Tig. I wanted to have a go at welding aluminium for the first time and it proved difficult.
If you've never done any Tig welding of aluminium then you'll possibly make all the mistakes first but whilst practicing it's surprising the volume of Pure Argon that is quickly used and this gas alone isn't cheap. Like you it's just an hobby with me in my home workshop; good luck.
I've been with BOC now for a year and still find it difficult to understand the invoices; I've just received this morning a BOC invoice for £62.40 which I presume is the yearly subs? I've paid in full anyway because being fully retired means I don't have lots of spare time with lots more pressing jobs to sort out. It's very cold outside but I was out early doing the usual grafting having just come indoors for a welcome mug of tea.

This is my easy retirement which prevents me getting into the workshop. Just one of the laurel stumps I've removed from the top of the mountain this summer; it took 24 tons of hydraulic jack pressure to break this free of the embedded stone and a 2.500Lb winch to drag it across the garden all done on my own. I'm now aged 73 and still dreaming of getting into my workshop.
Over the last few days I've been attacking this stump/root ball and yesterday ran a full car load of lumps I'd removed from it; I've destroyed my chainsaw blade and ruined no end of sabre saw blades I've even used my bow saw on it but even when I think I've cleared all the stones and soil there's still lots more I can't even see. It's been freezing cold with frost and poured with rain as I've worked this is the last main lump and as seen there's absolutely no way to untangle it so I keep nibbling away; it's still much too heavy for me to lift into the car on my own but this morning I've rolled it down the steep garden and used a sack cart to take it down to the workshop; now I don't care if it snows which is actually forecast; perhaps I can at last get into the workshop doing something I've got to do not something I want to do like playing with my Tig welder and other toys.
What an horrible job this has been where for days I've worked myself to a stand still but I won't quit until it's at the tip. I've used eight cold chisels to try to split it here four are shown but it won't play fair; yesterday I sharpened an SDS chisel as I would sharpen a wood chisel knowing this would break through encountered stone but surprisingly the chisel failed to penetrate the wood.
Sorry to hijack this thread but Tig welding for me has been very difficult with problems right from the start but hopefully once this big stump job is finally sorted I can relax and reintroduce myself to all my machines and toys.

forget it put it round the back of the shed leave a year then have another go at the moment its very green wood had to do any thing with leave to rot and dry out make the job 10x easyer

oh yes.. an arc welder, or even my crappy old migmate 105 would do the job i want in a fashion... but it'll make a hell of a mess with welding splatter so i can't do that inside the wooden shed, and especially not in the room the bus simulator lives in without wrapping everything in a hundred welding blankets, so i'd be constantly dismantling the frame.
So i considered Tig, as its something i've always wanted to try, and seeing wintergratin use a tig on his marble machine right next to delicate finished parts has shown me it's a fairly clean method of welding, maybe only beaten by gas?
and if i dont get on with it, it can be used as an arc welder
But my girlfriend offered to get me a tig welder for xmas, i was looking for a cheapo dc only one at about £150, when i told her about the sherman 206p that's basically a 1200+ quid jassic in a blue paint job, she was like 'erm, ok'
but when it went on sale the other day, she said 'order it' so i didn't ask twice,
But then it was looking like costing me £250 or more for gas to even begin learning to use it, and i was getting despondent and wishing i'd not asked for it, i felt i might have had to cancel the order or send it back / sell it on ebay, as it'd cost too much to run.
Took me a while, but figuring out that boc is the cheapest way to get 4.6 cubic meters (20 litre bottle) of argon for £132 as soon as the welder arrives has made things ok again, thank bod for the hobby deal.

Thanks angellonewolf for your suggestion. Yes it would be a very easy option but I wanted rid of this final lump of stump it being the end of three years very hard graft in the gardens. Yesterday morning I removed another load of soil and stones from it whilst also using the sabre saw to further reduce its size; by dinner time I could finally just lift the stump but then the chisels were still fully driven in. I gave this a lot of thought and came up with an idea which I tried after dinner; I chucked a 22mm spade bit into my electric drill and proceeded to drill deep parallel holes against each chisel to reduce pressure on the chisels; it worked a treat and in no time at all the chisels were out. Our local tip closes at 4:00pm and it's six miles distant from us; after loading the car I was at the tip for around 3:15 taking a few minutes to unload; I sure was delighted to get rid of this stump so today I can relax and first job is to tidy the workshop and give the tools used some well deserved TLC.

I'm all set now for another year with BOC and not worry about the volume of Argon gas I use; I can't do with all the hassle of trying to save a few quid; when I need a new full cylinder I'll just pop over to Wakefield Welding Center taking the empty cylinder along and just need to sign then eventually BOC will send the bill; couldn't be easier. I don't even begrudge the delivery charge of cylinders to agents after all heavy transport costs a lot to operate; I worked in distribution for 24 years before retirement.
Tig is certainly cleaner than arc so considering your restrictions Gazz292 Tig makes a lot of sense for you and of course Tig also allows a much greater range of materials to be welded. For many years I got by with a cheap 140A SIP Weldmate arc welder; it did a good job and seldom cut out but having trained on industrial 3 phase Oxford oil cooled arc welders I always fancied an Oxford. About four years ago I finally bought a very clean 180A Pickhill Bantam it looking like it had been cared for the only downside was its weight; I couldn't lift it on my own it taking two of us to load and unload it from the car but it's a brilliant welder; it will weld all day long without fear of cutting out. The Bantam takes care of welding mild steel which is about as cheap as welding gets but a year ago my lovely wife treated me to a Tig welder which is very expensive indeed for a home workshop; the price of gas alone can't be ignored and is obviously the reason of this thread. How many buy an expensive car and then complain about cost of fuel trying to save a bit of money; a new Tig welder isn't cheap and needs gas?
I'm sure discussions about gas suppliers and comparing gas prices will be ongoing but had I known up front how much gas is needed I'd have opened a BOC account and just get on practicing Tig welding; I wasted lots of time and travelling costs obtaining gas but now I'm well sorted with BOC and access to welding supplies all in one place.

Just had a 'aaaarrrggg farket' moment.
Got my BOC account all set up now (6 days from starting it.. weekend in there tho) on the hobby deal, so for a Y (20 litre @ 230 bar) cylinder of pure argon, it's £57.99, and £52.00 a year rental, plus vat.
Went to order it online to collect from my local agent, and it was saying my local stockist was ~75 miles away!
That would be a 3 and a half hour 150 mile round trip to get gas
Emailed Mark Wilcock at BOC whos been helping me set up the account via email (as i don't use the phone due to asd) and got a speedy reply that confirmed the prices i'd be paying for my gas, and that i can just go to my local BOC agent and get a cylinder of gas when ever i want.
Advised me to set up the direct debit, so i did this (i was worried that i'd get the rental charge taken the second i signed up... but it's invoiced at the end of the month i get the cylinder)
So hopefully, either later on today, or more likely tomorrow, i'll be able to make my first ever pigeon poo replicas with a tig
