I thought the Nexus rods weren't great, the 2.5 mm sometimes showed a thing like arc blow, where the arc came out of one side of the rod. The 3.2mm rods were a bit better. I'd think twice about using their MIG wire.

That is the same problem we found with the rods. They welded like they had damaged flux, where all of a sudden the arc blows out of the side of the rod, then returns back to normal.

We used Nexus wire for a while, maybe 3-4 years ago. We bought pallets of the stuff. Forever got tangles in the wire, and feed issues. Ended up wasting full spools, lost time for welders fiddling about with them.
Had a spectacular blow out with the supplier and ditched a full pallet in the skip for them to pick up.

We went onto Lincoln and i can say with certainty that we have never had any issues in 3 or 4 years. (Other reputable welding wire suppliers exist!)

i've seen the rep loose all the sales by over competing on price. imo a lot of reps need thining out as they don't appear to be very usefull, all the usally want to do is sell somethign to you thats cheeper than what your useing, what is really wanted is better value.

i've seen mig wire com ein unbelevably cheep but its actualy very very expensive when you count the time ******* about with it jamming up all the time, then it ends up cracking something crazy, swap over to a diffrent make of wire and no problems, for the few quid per roll why would you cheep out

Yeah, this is all true. I think Lincoln cost us about another £3-4 a spool. It would have effectively saved us about £10 a spool on welder's lost time.

I dug out an ancient box of BOC rods I had today, and I mean old....they're about 20 years old I think and they've been open for most of that, burned fine on AC but I did have to up the amps to 125! Bit high on a 3/32nd 6013 rod but it got a decent result

and the handfull of extra contact tips, useing the cheep wire from ESC when we were shed bashing everytime the wire tangels up unless your lucky it knackers the contact tip up.
so you've also gone from 1 - 2 spools per tip to 10 tips per spool.

it's highly anoying when your shed bashing but when doing repairs on machenary and it takes a fair amount of climbing / clambering crawling and squeezing to get to where your welding, after threadign the torch though the maze and then after 30 seconds it knots up in the wire feeed ARGH

No, HD landrover bumper! Its 5mm steel rather than the standard 1.2mm paper....

With the 2.5s I found that about half were OK, but then you'd find one with the arc going all over the place. With the 3.2s a lot seemed to have the flux so that one side burned away slower than the other making a good weld hard to do. I suspected uneven coating. I'd never seen any other rods behave like that and I've probably tried a dozen brands, some cheap rubbish with their own problems such as heavy smoke and losing the arc all the time. The Nexus rods weren't nice to use.

From what you said a few years back, you used BOC everyday rods by the ton and they were fine. Then they changed their supplier and hoped no one would notice but the new rods were obvious rubbish.

Useful to me though. My local supplier sells Nexus as their everyday stuff. That's how I came by the rods. I have to make an effort to buy other welding consumables. Well, there's Screwfix etc, which aren't worth going to. Having struggled through about 4 kg of 3.2s and the same of 2.5s, I had no intention of using any more Nexus rods. I did wonder what the Nexus MIG wire was like as getting Lincoln etc, requires a definite effort. So now I know that I simply have to make the effort.

It's a shame, because i like the people at the local welding supplies place and would like to deal with them, but not while they sell Nexus tat.

Once upon a time they were all Welders or Engineers and some were very good Welders

Bohler is much the same, There was a couple of really good field guys there, would come in demo consumables, the sort that would tell you that to add a volt use this motion etc, to get 100% from the product, never sold the consumables directly, never wanted to just knew the products, and if you wanted any you knew where to get them from.

In these enlightened times they no longer need people in the field, technical questions can be answered by loaded questions by the girls in the office, and we can just put a rep on the road with no experance welding selling to half the country.

Nexus are Leengate so they are already rebranded........Leengate are now owned by BOC

As I said earlier we (Lincoln) used to make the Everyday and the Nexus (in different plants) but they dumped us for Chinese before I finished and that was 2009/10 so probably 07 or 08.

I think BOC have since introduced another family brand name RYVAL

Incidentally BOC are now owned by LINDE GAS

Iv mentioned this before when I properly used to get my hands dirty, I ran barrow loads of the old BOC Lincoln every days, especially 5.0 6013s they were a cracking rod at a really good price, then they went to hell the red boxed stuff was probably some of the worst rods id ever used, and the 7018s were a step worse than the 6013s.

Unless they have suddenly improved in the last 5 years then there Rods are as good as useless, our local store generally stocks only Lincoln and Bohler Rods which tell me just how wonderful there own products are.

True.
But although it does not apply to everyone (i.e you and me) there is a lot of demand for cheaper. If nobody wanted cheaper then the tat wouldn't be produced - or it would never have sold and would have disappeared very quickly as a failure.
There's always someone who'll take a chance with cheaper. In fact, while I appreciate good stuff and now try to buy decent stuff as a rule, I've bought many a cheap thing on price alone, especially for occasional use. It's often been a regret though, in the long run. Lesson learnt.

I'd agree with this. If a salesman wants to sell me something, and/or take me away from a particular supplier we use, i want to ask him questions to understand what i am likely to get. What i seem to get in response is lots of um's and ah's and promises to get back to me or 'email me something'. Not really good enough to get an order from me.
I'd much rather speak to a 'dirty hand' man who knows the product inside out rather than a shiny-suited man who doesn't.

It's all about value for money. Quite often i don't want the cheapest (Because that tells me i'm not getting a suitable product) but what i do want is something that does exactly what we want, we have the back up when something goes wrong, and get the right service, delivery when we need. The latest ilk of salesman are all well versed in giving me the standard spiel that they churn out but without any real substance of what they sell. Like you say, it could be washing machines or welding machines, the spiel is all the same.

You told me what floats your boat it's what I must sort to secure the job if I was the rep
However you told me at the end a good guy would get the end out of you at the beginning
Take you back to Mr Gerrard and his knowledge of cars here
The trick is for the rep to not take a single step except listen to you and that's precisely what he would do if he was any good.
Personally it sounds like a simple list of what you do and dont like with solutions at better value for money ( which is when you might get the pre close)and then all needs doing is to sort it. I don't think it would be one visit but on the second all the tools would be in the box and a helping hand if required.
This isn't my imagination running wild the only snag is if you realy mean what you said / posted - the pre close would sort that
Shiny suits? Step one is the first 12 things you see and then the first 12 you see
For a good guy it's as easy as breaking a bad tack
To be fair welding reps that visit fabricators are never going to be top drawer quality and they don't like shiny suits company cars or basic salary

I dont agree at all........maybe some items but not welding machines and consumables. You need to able to demonstrate the quality / advantages otherwise all you have is price.

A decent guy will sort this without getting spatter burns in his shimey suit
It might not be exactly how you expect but there is a solution just like developing a new electrode
I can think of a few right off but then you might be the same with the electrode?

There is a sales manager at a local large supplier who has multiple branches in the Lancashire area (without mentioning names). The nearest branch I wont deal with as its their he is based, says he is a welder but honestly he only know rods by stock codes he once told me there was no such thing as a 6013!
When I need to use them I travel to the next nearest and the manager says openly that he is knows not very much about using the stuff his speciality is getting you what you want and to be fair he does. It wouldn't surprise me one bit to find he actually does know his onions.

I buy from the branch were the guy says he knows nowt
But it's always best to find out all you can over time
When I trained salesman for moben they actually replaced the surveyor training with me and the appliance training as well.
That's just me though I have to know the ins and outs of a rats butt

I know plenty who are exceptional in thier field but know nothing other than how to close a deal and make appointments.
