The main dimensions of the original South Bend spindle, with its 1.5" x 8 t.p.i. nose, were unchanged, and indeed stayed the same on the ordinary V-belt drive Boxfords until the end of production. An interesting note in the Company's records states that: From Serial 1360 all machines have an 8 t.p.i. Whitworth form spindle nose - a reference to the fact that the first batch must have had an exact copy of the South Bend fitting with its American 60° thread angle (the Whitworth is 55°).

Chucks and backplates yes. Make sure it has fixed and travelling steadies too. QCTP is always worth having. Get an AUD if possible and if it's 3-phase don't be put off since using a VFD makes it even better. If you can get a late model you've an extra half inch of swing too,

thank you for the advice sea dog, I will be using the QCTP from my other lathe, the one I'm looking at is indeed three phase and I will be using a VFD.

Anyway i think i better stop hijacking this post!

well i said goodbye to the boxford, its off down to eSCHEn's gaff to enjoy a new life. was a good laugh meeting Darren and his partner. i even got to make up a couple of tie downs for the back of the van. enjoy your new toy mate.

Just back and knackered. Was a treat meeting MrM and his lovely clan. I particularly liked the furry members!

Machine is fantastic and can't wait to get a VFD sorted so it can come and live with me in the workshop. Having a wee holiday right now in a safe place

A great deal? I don't think great is strong enough Scott given what MrM did for me. A sounder bloke you couldn't hope to meet

Given the usual 'buying a lathe' advice given here, I do hope you not only got the lathe but also 3,4 and 6 jaw chucks each in at least 2 different sizes, 5 different sized faceplates, fixed and travelling steadies, standard and capstan tailstocks, 2 types of quick change toolpost, a toolpost grinder, a selection of hss and insert tooling, a full collet set, coolant system, a vertical slide, a fully fitted dro, a cnc conversion and 3 months of full time training all thrown in.

Cuz, y'know, it's the extras that cost money if you have to buy them separately

At 200 quid it was still an absolute bargain as a bare unit.
The extras can come in time
A few tools and some round scrap will be enough to get him hooked. After that you'll be hunting the bay for those little bargains to build it up
Welcome to the lathe club Darren if I can do it on my poxy little thing you'll be producing fine work in no time. That back gear would be first on my list. Those slower speeds are a god send if you plan on cutting a thread or two.

What is exactly wrong with the back gear. if its tha shaft then I seed thin on t'interwebs

I just looked back at the Initial Pics on the thread. Drive gear is stripped on the spindle so it will not fully repair it

Generally this is the part that fails. Hopefully no damage to the bull and fixed gears.

I've finally setup a control panel for the VFD. Now Ive got a big switch for direction and an emergengy stop, a nice knob for variable speed and a rev counter.
I have installed buttons for Jog forward and back, but the VFD need to be in a different mode than i realised (or tested with)
So I may install a relay and a 1K resistor to bypass the speed control pot and with this in with the switches to gice a jog function.
