if its any help the t0 dickson toolpost is the correct size. 73mm sq and 51mm high

so it looks like the smallest listed the 250-111 is a little on the large size, but should do. if its too big the centre hights going to be harder to adjust.

RDG tools usually do a disckson copy the right size, but they look to be out of stock.

Rotagrip do them too, thay had them made but thay are a wee bit on the steep side.

A word of warning though. the tolerences were a few thou over or under the inch size and have caused confusion in people making copies. I bought some holders from rotagrip and they didn't fit and the tolorences had wandering in the copying.
They are helpful though. they changed the non fitting ones after explaining the issue and they had some that fitted.

250-100 is the piston version of the 250-111 wedge version according to the blurb in the add. Are we to presume that they have listed the lathe swin incorrectly. Should it be 9-12 instead of 12? Plus the advert is only listing "medium" in the selection

just double checked and the medium is a 250 - 200 so its a no no, will keep looking.

Although lathes are designated by their swings, carriage and cross slide elevations can vary with different lathe's manufactured over the years, not a lot, but maybe by a significant amount in regards to retrofiting an old machine. The size you need will be "equivalent" to an Aloris AXA quick change tool post holder, which is designed for lathes up to a 10" swing, or 5" by UK measurument. Google Aloris, and have look in their catalogue for specs, which should match the clones of the e-bay offerings. Hope this helps.

They look pretty well priced. I always think about QCTPs when I'm sitting in the house - need to go and measure what size I'd actually need!

If you have a mill then it's easier to make the dove tailed ones . See doubleboos ts videos
There are several different angles on the dickson and they are hardened too.obviously after the machining.

my tool post stud is 7/8ths however i see cronos also sell the 5/8ths replacement stud i would need to work with that post.

I've got the boxford badged dickson. Fitted on the original top slide ok. I've never measured it. But I have the original lantern and 4 way toolpost and they all fit. I'm in the pub now but I'll measure tomorrow if you like

Personally I think wedge type phase-II clone is the way forwards, or multi fix. I have a Dickson type and dislike it a lot.

I had a piston one on my last machine, dickinson copy on this machine, ill not change it, but prefer the piston type too.

so i did a bit more today, cleaned out the tool cabinet under the lathe and got a coat of primer on the insides and the door, i then revisited the tool post for a look at it with a fresh head, it appears i wont be fitting a new tool post on it as the slide has had a repair which i didn't even notice, on further investigation it would appear the post has been over tightened and snapped the T slot which has been repaired by drilling and tapping the fitting extra plates over the top, it works but has the unfortunate side effect of raising the height of the tool holder which means getting larger tools on centre is a challenge, if i was to fit a QCTP i doubt i would get the holders to drop low enough.
any thought or idea would be gratefully appreciated.

ive highlighted the breaks in this pic, not that they need it, the left hand side is broken all the way along the length of the jaw, when i removed the repair plate it fell out. the right hand side has been welded (badly) and then the repair plate fitted.

would it be fee-sable to have the repairs done properly by getting it welded then machined back out to the correct size? this would then allow me to fit a standard stud and a QCTP.

You should look at mrpete22 on eBay. He makes a new top slide for a southbend 6inch

It's a shame you didn't notice and swap it on the old one. But the @eSCHEn would be writing this

I'm guessing the correct solution is a replacement top slide

i will get something sorted, its still very usable, just with smaller tools so you can get center height. i need to get a new split belt for the gears and drive belt for the motor but other than that its a good machine. looking on lathes.co.uk it would appear to be a fair age too...
