Brazing fail

All the brazing I've done is with Oxy Acetylene welding torch and flux covered brazing rods. Need to get a lot of heat into the piece and the rod.

What's the deal with flux covered rod. Do they do away with the need for more flux? Or just stop you needing to flux the rod?

With the insulating blocks, I had no trouble getting it more than hot enough, surprisingly!

i have a tub of DEGUSSA H paste that i have found to be the dogs nuts
that is for silverbrazing heavy metals its great on cast iron and stainless with silver

, never tried it with sif bronze
for that i use this a gas flux unit ,

is borax a taboo chemical now ? we got sent to the chemist for borax when we were apprentices

Well, one deal is getting the correct flux for the rod! I have to admit, though, I don’t skimp on flux and often add extra.

It is likely you got it too hot for the flux.

I'm almost certain it was too hot for the flux, but that's how hot it needed to be to melt the rod!

Yeah anything with nickel is for overlay normally, you don't want a high strength joint for cast iron, you want a ductile joint,

Sliding wear, seal areas, water valves, turbines, housings etc

That's deffo for fusion welding cast iron. Plenty of info on the internet about it - flux would be SIF CAST IRON flux although i cannot say whether that is still any good. If it's anything like their rods now, it won't be

Would think these are a newer rod, but have the same surface & are square.
They say Gas & TIG but in the blurb it says use OA
The ones I have wont work with Tig and no flux

I never used any extra flux, had to melt the rod with the torch into the joint but always flowed well.

I was the one who supplied Brad with the old swp flux covered rods that worked so well. Sadly I’ve got no clue where there were made or what specific type they were. But they are excellent for cast iron.

They were very good, perfect for cast iron, shame it seems they can't be had anymore

Swp flux coated rods are apparantly still available. Are they just rubbish now like the sif stuff?
