I thought in your day centurion was a rank, not a tank? The early Bedford's had a LMG.
AKA a bREN
When i was working on recoveries there was a, MJ bedford 4X4 with a hiab and hydraulic winch . If my memory serves it could be used out the back and the front of the wagon. It also had a hydraulic ground anchor. Such was it's power and cross country ability that i once pulled a yacht on its trailer out of a boggy horse field, beside the A1 after having become detached when the driver fell asleep. I was on a while mind, but it was the only tool for the job. We had landrovers and all manner of things have a go with no success.

So how was the winch rotated, cog and crank handle? but I guess still had to crawl under to route cable, darn usefull kit though eh.ArtherSome did have a centrally mounted winch which could be used for front or rear pulls and some had rotatable centrally mounted winches which could have been used for front and rear pulls and side pulls. Unimogs often had the centrally mounted rotatable winch to allow for front or rear pulls and side pulls fitted if specified.
.....The REME, Royal engineers and the Marines (Pongo).......
