If you cut a radius in the steps it will be a whole lot easier to use, you just loosen the bolt and turn the plate to release it. With the huge steps you have in it now it will be a chore winding the nut up and down.

Or you could put it in a 4-jaw and cut the radius both ways in your lathe.

Most old machinery was bsw. And I invested in a lot of bsw tapping sets. Somtimes I come across a totally strange thread that doesn't match anything .

I can't remember when I ever had a seized BSW bolt. Machines even 50yrs old you just crack the nut loose and undo by hand.

I recall reading something, many, many years ago, that said that the large number of different threads in the Imperial System all existed because each had mechanical properties that made them more suited to a specific task than just using one standard thread form.

I think it was a BA thread although can't be sure. It was 40 tpi thread if I can remember correctly.

I would say that is probably correct although the history of threads is a topic unto itself.
Metric is jack of all trades master of none.

Today I made a few plate that bolts to the front of the headstock. It's just a cover plate. The one that came with it was a crud bit of plate that didn't fit very well and this it not acceptable. I used a bit of 5mm plate. Made a template . And made a new cover that fits. Just need to paint it. One of them little jobs off the to do list.
