Today my list is to clean up the spindle collars. These have had a hammer. Nothing a good file session can't sort. And make a new locking washer. This was someone's vain attempt to lock both collars together. Why I don't know. Will figure out a different idea to that. I will also make a tool that fits the slots on the collars properly. Should there be a lock washer? Looks like the locking nuts on the steering stem and I have never seen one of them with a lock washer, the whole idea is the nuts lock against each other.

That washer sat between the two collars. That was all that came off.

No way of finding out if there was one when originally built? Just seems odd to have the locking washer staked both ways between two lock nuts.
Hopefully @Pete. or someone else with more machinery experience than me will comment.

If at that the washer was fitted because the nuts kept coming loose where someone has used a drift to adjust it and burred all the edges over so they don't lock.
I'd put them in a 3-jaw held internally and skim off all the burrs so the flat faces can lock against each other.

They are nice and flat now Pete. They have all been filed. Do I make another washer or just lock both together

Lock nuts jamb together. Lock washers tab off the nut and a non-moving part. So it's one or the other but not both.

It’s not really much different to the way some truck hub nuts are locked, a nut goes against the bearing to pre load, tab washer followed by another nut which is done up tight, tab washer then gets dressed over the inner nut and outer, only thing different here is they are castellated. Scania and some others have grub screws in the face of the outer locking nut , once the hub nuts are tightened the grub screws are done up which bind the two together.

Yes I have done hub nuts and yes it's similar. Unfortunately I don't have pictures of the original empire spindle. I have eliminated the washer. When I run it up I will see if they move.

Run them up with two C spanners and job done.

I got asked to check alathe with assumed bad bearings and it was burred locking nuts putting a uneven pre load on

These lock nuts had some serious stick in the past. But got them nice and flat. Making two c spanners at the moment. And welding the broken lug for the small door.

Door lug in place. Horrible job. But it's gone in a treat. Clean up and finish welding.

Just a little file up tomorrow and then paint.
My tubes of grease turned up so I can install the spindle and bearings and fittings.

Three times. First time was I put the bearing cap on back to front. Second time I forgot to put the key in the keyway. Third time was the last gear that works the tumbler had a little burr inside. But sorted it in the end. Biggest battle is the weight of the pulley and gear.

So today's task took longer than I had hoped .had to make a C spanner. I could of brought one but couldn't be bothered to travel out to get one. Spanner is almost done. Will make another one

so I can lock both nuts together. But it works .

Today's task. Fit backgear .....all was good until some one drops the shaft snapping the threaded end off..... So drilled and tap a new thread. Sorted..... gears are in and work nice..... Really like these grease cups. Fill em up with grease and as you turn them down it pushes the grease in to the bearings....
