the plate is around 350mm long,100mm high

on the root run,stop 1/4 of the way in and mark on plate(point A)
continue and complete rest of run,takes a little over 2 full rods

complete second pass

on third pass,stop and mark 1/2 the way in and mark(point B)
continue pass

cut at A and B

I normally weld from right to left, so I will either have to practice up again doing left to right, or can I just mark points 'A' and 'B' on the opposite side?

i dont know about direction,there was no continental drivers in the class

Great stuff! Its a rather daft thing I have, i'm left handed, and I will pull a gas Mig from left to right, but stick welding is always from right to left. Not just because I like to watch the weld puddle clearly without getting my hands in the way, but because I can keep a steady consistant rate this was... weird, I know.

I'm glad its either way for the test, but i must try to get more welding done in the opposite travel direction.

That makes sense, I'm right handed and I'll Mig "right to left" and stick "left to right", one's pushing the other's pulling.

60 hours? Wow ! I'm going to be putting in a few hours practice each night to get this right, didn't realise how tricky it could be.

I was sort of wondering about the angle, i wasn't sure whether or not to angle it at the same 45 degree angle as when doing the root pass, or just run it like a standard bead..

i also did 60 hours for level 1 and 60 hours for level 2 saying that i managed to do MIG and ARC in that time probably did more then 60 hours aswell seeing as i have MIG , TIG and ARC welders at home ahah!

its all the practise tbh and im only 20 ahha! althogh ill probably never do it as a job as im doing a HND in electrical engineering always a good skill to have!

Yes, same here, I have my own kit at home, at work and at my college, so I'm never more then 10 meters from welding equipment I've got 12 months of welding every other day under my belt, and its an investment, as I have massively improved my own welding techniques.

Being able to weld something is good skill to have.

But you can't always weld the way you find natural, so you have to be able to do it both ways.

got the results of the stick tonight,i passed!

tig test on friday,and starting the mig course a week after

Congratulations!, What level was it? NVQ level I mean?

True, I can weld the other way, but when/where I can, its always right to left with stick.

tig fillet yesterday,got the bloody shakes.
managed to scrape through the visual though,off for testing

Heres a pair or multi pass tee fillets i knocked up

2.5mm Esab 6013's @ 60-65 amps on 4mm mild steel.

Not majorly pretty, but there are 3 runs in there, and that diagram earlier on in this thread massively helped me to understand where exactly to place my overlapping beads. thank you!
