So hoping this is promising. Kingspan emailed me at 0832 this morning asking for the serial number. I guess the sellers (Deso/Atlas etc forward these queries on to Kingspan as the manufacturer).
Weirdly, when looking for the serial number i noticed a very very faded sticker on the top that I think said 3500BT - that would make this a Deso tank but the bottom looks exactly like the ones Atlas sell and different to the Deso ones - the lids are identical.
Anyway - hopefully Kingspan will tell me what to do. I was all for just taking the big nut off this morning and sealing the threads anyway if they didnt reply as I have engineered what it all looks like in my head overnight and it should be fine (yeah right!)!

Thanks Jenki - thats more of an essex flange type arrangement I think
I beleive mine is a pipe threaded into and sealed against the inner tank that that massive nut then threads onto and somehow seals to the outer bund. This is how it came from the manufacturer, but i was just surprised i could turn the massive nut at all as I expected this to be sealed quite tightly on the the threads of the main outlet.

Had a useful reply from Kingspan from their Somerset branch:
'I am writing in regard to the query you sent in to Atlas tanks. We are all part of Kingspan and this Atlas tank is actually manufactured on our site.
The nut you are referring to certainly shouldn’t be loose. What you have on these tanks is a brass back nut that is moulded into the inner tank. We then screw what we call a TEC-4 into this brass nut with an O RING resting in a groove that is then secured to the tank once it has been fully screwed in. We then have another O RING at the other end of the TEC 4, and this end is pushed through the ‘bund’ so that it sticks out externally to the bunded tank. Finally we will secure this large nut (TEC 1 / HEX NUT) which also has another O RING over the end sticking out of the tank. We secure this to a certain tightness before leaving the factory. PTFE tape is used on both ends of the TEC 4 also.
Hopefully that makes sense. Where are you located may I ask? As I would be more than happy to get an engineer out to get this sorted for you?'
Given the size of the tank and the cost to fill it I have asked how much to have an engineer have a look. It sounds like it is setup like my diagram earlier so I guess I could remove the nut, re-wrap with PTFE and then connect up but it might be worth the peace of mind to have someone trained check it if there is someone local. To call the nut loose may be an overstatement but I can turn it slowly by hand. Its probably absolutely fine!!!

I think so - even if I do have to pay a little to have someone check it who knows what it should look like, the tank was still a bargain second hand given that it retails around £3k! Impressed with the speed at which my query has been picked up as well - you cant fault Kingspan for that or the detail of their answer.

Yep. I was impressed. I wasn't even hinting at a freebie because I bought it secondhand! I dont know if they sell direct but I can give you the contact details of the chap who has been helping me if you want.
If I'm reading the Kingspan response correctly then the large silver nut in your original photo should be tight against the outer tank face with an o ring behind it and all you really need to do is gently turn it to ensure that it is tight. You would then support said nut with your adjustable to stop it turning whilst screwing in you valve assembly.
I think you are right. But they have offered to come and check it and change the seals, then torque it up correctly so I would be silly not to accept that offer i think!
Agree and I will try as I am curious as to the setup too - I think I have it figured out in my head now but we will see.
Well. Excellent service from Kingspan. Two chaps turned up late morning. Took the lid off the bund, checked the tank and changed the large nut and o ring on the bottom of the tank. They were happy following that. It was waaay too loose looking at how tight they went once the nut and O ring was changed. They even fitted my adapter and filter for me too. So, I ca crack on and order oil now!
