Having both heavy white wires to the transformer primary in terminal 3 ( instead of one in 3 and the other in 5 ) means both ends of the primary are connected to Neutral. The transformer would not get any power, but that in itself would not blow the plug fuse, so something else must be wrong.

Ah, OK - In fact it didnt blow the fuse but triggered the RCD to open. Now could it be that if both the live and neutral supplying the switch/transformer are touching, this would trigger the RCD trip???? This didnt happen of course until I manually pushed down the magnetic switch.......
Further update - I completed the "repair" by using a single strand copper with a thin heatshrink cover. I softened it first by heating it to red and quenching, this made it easier to bend and took out ant springiness. I soldered each end to a pad and covered the repair with epoxy. I have put everything back together and first attempt saw the coil pull in as it should but no wire feed. Several trigger presses later and it tripped the MCB in the CU.
A bit of head scratching and I realised that wire feed pot was turned fully slow, probably Off! Turned that one up and noticed power switch was at max. Turned that one down and it all worked OK, wire feed OK and I was able to strike an arc. I have found before that if I used full power, it would trip the MCB in the garage CU and more often than not the RCD in the main CU....So it looks as if I have been successful in fixing it. I know I need to carry out some welding before I can be sure but at the moment all is looking very positive......I have taken out the fan as its really noisy but I can see how by adding a small spacer I can stop the fan innards from rubbing and making a horrible noise........
Lets keep fingers crossed that after I fix that I will have a working, quiet welder!!!! Yahooooo.
