What is everyone else paying who is still with virgin.
Finally had it with Virgin Media. Price will be doubling for the same package when the contract renews.
Spent a good hour on the phone to them being passed from pillar to post, and the best they can offer is a downgrade from m350 to m125 for what we are paying now
So Im looking to change to bt or plusnet, but of course this will mean losing our blueyonder email account.
I know you shouldnt rely on this for storage, but there are email files that need to be kept, and then of course theres facebook, forums, online banking, inline shopping etc that all are going to need changing.
Is there an easy way to sort this or is it a case of trying to remember who you have associated with this email domain and swapping them all over individually.
Im guessing for the emails, they can all be dragged and dropped into a gmail account for now (or is there a better way to do this)
Will virgin media keep the email open for a period of time so I can put mail forwarding on to try and catch any stragglers ?
What a pain, but Im not being held to ransom as a loyal long teem customer
You could install outlook (if you have microsoft office) set up the mail account as IMAP , do a sync (this will take a while, might need to restart it a couple of times) then save the mail box as an outlook mail folders file.
Should keep all the email and attachments (IIRC).
Other mail clients could be used but outlook is quite simple for this. (I think you used to be able to do this with the free outlook express but not sure if you still can).

I was going to suggest the opposite. Set up an email account to their pop server, download the inbox then change the server settings so it can no longer connect. Then your computer will have a permanent local copy of the emails

Surely the Virgin mailbox can have a forward set up? That way any emails will arrive wherever required until or if they bin it.
Yes I was going to mention a pop setup but thought it might add confusion, slight advantage of IMAP is if you goof up you can try another way
Although the pop method would mean that once your webmail shows no emails you would know they are all downloaded to the mail client.

I had thought of that. May have another do at knocking some money off from them before end of contract . Its just hard to not put the phone down on them as they are programmed to upsell instead of reducing your costs

Regardless of staying or leaving, do it anyway. That way you can wean off their mail address at your pace.

I’ve had Yahoo and Hotmail accounts for 20+ years and I’ve never had the emails saved anywhere, they just exist in the server, wherever that may be. And I can access them anywhere I can log onto the internet.
I currently use BT for my broadband but I’m in the process of swapping to Vodaphone. BT are putting the price up to £42 in March, but a new customer can get the same for £26… …so screw them.
Vodaphone are £32 with full fibre freshly run to my house.

That's actually a very good point , make sure any accounts you have registered on that email you know the password for so you don't get issues when trying to reset password.

I am with Vodafone for my mobile so it's possible I could get a discount.
I reckon after 39 years both with my wife and virgin in some form. Even had ISDN at one stage running my bulletin boards I i reckon I deserve a break...lol
What's max speed of Vodafone fibre?

i only paid for the 35 in the early days then upgraded to the 50 but i also got tv and phone packages as well
the 50mbps changed and was upgraded to this over the years
just never bothered upgrading it as it was always enough for me to really hammer the internet just most sites cant handle the uploading
it was fine enough for 2 game streamers and 1 person watching film sites
or 2 watching film sites and 1 game streamer

From what I can see, most people here do not understand the difference between POP3 and IMAP account access.
When you access an account using POP3 (Forte Agent, Ritlabs The Bat, Outlook, K9 and many other good email clients) the program downloads a copy of the email from the server and stores it locally on the machine, using these SAME programs you can switch the selector to "receive by IMAP" and what the program does is download locally the headers and lets you "see" the email on the server, what it doesn't do is download the whole body of the email "to your computer" so this makes it easy (in a configuration sense) for you to view the exact same email from your phone and your laptop at the same time and when you delete this email it then vanishes from all your devices.
I must say this, I have been involved in Network engineering for more than thirty five years both professionally and as a "serious amateur" and frankly I just don't know how the average user gets on.
I suppose this is why Apple gained so much traction, they take away a lot of the hard work and configuration settings making things just work as far as the user is concerned.

You can still move IMAP folders and it's contents to another provider IE mail account and you can still export them to a file, I've moved IMAP to my Gmail on my phone.

As I said, people really do not understand what IMAP is. From the Microsoft website:
IMAP allows you to access your email wherever you are, from any device. When you read an email message using IMAP, you aren't actually downloading or storing it on your computer; instead, you're reading it from the email service. As a result, you can check your email from different devices, anywhere in the world: your phone, a computer, a friend's computer.
IMAP only downloads a message when you click on it, and attachments aren't automatically downloaded. This way you're able to check your messages a lot more quickly than POP.

I was with ntlworld for years before Virgin took them over, Virgin allowed you so many new email accounts plus you could keep the ntl ones (up to 9 I think).
After some years Virgin's prices had crept up - more like leapt up - to silly money so I decided to bin them and move to Sky.
Made the phone call, got put through to Retentions who promptly slashed the bill by half, so I stayed put (which was of course their intention).
Moving on about a year or so and after almost monthly price rises, getting it back up to silly money, I just closed the account completely and went over to using mobile phone data (albeit limited, which is why I stopped posting on here for a while
).When I closed the account, Virgin said that email accounts with them would stop working in about 90 days.
90 days passed, emails still worked... a year passed, emails still worked... about three years later one of my ntl accounts (I had a few, sometimes disposable ones or titled for a particular forum I'd signed up to) packed in.
A couple of years later, another two died.
It's now been nearly seven years and two of my ntlworld accounts still work
For anything important I use a gmail [Google - spit - but at least it's free and not likely to go out of service anytime soon] but it'll be interesting to see how long I can make 90 days last
Meanwhile I bought a Mifi with a 50Gb SIM from Smarty (£10 a month), and the company mobile has 100Gb data so you can't get rid of me that easily
