I chucked an old hammer in, came out black and greasy. Chucked it in the degreaser, rinsed and left to air dry and it is fine now

Black oxide.
Wash it off with warm water, or mix it with wax and use that to preserve the tool.
It is harless.

I was doing tubes yesterday and it didnt go to plan. The new short lengths were fine but I have 8 lengths about 700mm long and Im using 1.2m guttering as my citric bath. The problem is I'd already started these each end in a small container so I have about 200mm of hard scale in the middle.
Either my citric is exhausted - I put lots in and its still a pale colour, mix is about 2 weeks old,
or its choosing to eat the exposed mild in preference to the scale. Do I need to mask off the previously done bits?

I had to look that up to check it was actually real! When you think about the availability of things like plasma cutters and 3D printers at affordable prices these days, we may only be a few years away from being able to buy these for a few hundred pounds. Which would be rather nice!

They have been out for a few years, so i am sure the technology is well known to the chinese. If they can knock them out cheap is another question.

I forgot to take the bits out of the citric acid bath!
In the bottom of the container is like grey, crunchy scale:
The tools themselves are coated in the same stuff. A wire kitchen scourer will take it off but...
Is there a quick way if getting rid of this? White vinegar maybe?
The hinges and adjustables that were free are now seized with scale.

How long was it in there? I imagine disolved crud has dropped put of solution and crystalised. Id probably mix up some fresh hot acid and see what happens after an hour. Nothing will reverse the pitting but it should unsieze and get them back to clean bright metal.

In white vinegar for a couple of days. Did get rid of some of the scale but the parts are still seized (whereas they were getting quite free until I left them too long in the citric):

God knows what the crossmember is like I left in a bath full of the stuff since last November maybe? That plus some of my tools I made as an apprentice!

To be fair, after a couple of hours in a citric bath sat in the Sun today, all that crystallisation has gone and it's back looking brilliant. Pics later. Just left it with some penetrating oil and 3 in 1 to free up the adjustable whilst I find my impact driver bits.

I've ruined some old plane blades in citric acid. Something to do with the hardened faces/edges.
My surface guage block that I made as a 16 year old apprentice I reckon is pretty much ruined. I left this in the citric acid bath since Nov 2019 and only fished out today. This was originally hardened in a cyanide salt bath. I wonder if it's the hardened faces that have seen the most "damage"?
I just forgot about all the stuff in there what with Covid and so on.
The bath water, literally an old bath full of water I added kilos of citric acid to in the garden, has gone jet black and is full of crystal/scale in the bottom.
The knurling tool is maybe salvageable:
I'd be a bit sad if I stopped to think about it...

pop them back in a fresh batch of citric for a couple of days - you might find that they're not as bad as you think.

Ive found 2 things cause problems
Aluminium, really double check everything, I ruined a few items when I chucked some in I had assumed was steel, the rust was from another part
Cheap manky metal, caused the black coating on everything, cleaned up and redone in fresh acid sorted it

I left a WWII, American made, flat screwdriver bit for a brace in citric for several weeks. It has destroyed a lot of the surface, which surprised me as I didn't think that it was that aggressive. Be warned. Your surface gauge is probably toast

Agreed...maybe! The 3 four inch door hinges I threw in have gone the blackest and greasiest.
I think the trick is to pull the stuff out, wash in hot soapy water, rinse and put back in perhaps.
Hoping to maybe dry off, mask up the adjustable at least today then etch prime it.
The 3 cutting wheels in the pipe cutter have "rivetted" shafts. The cutting wheels are seized up still and blunt. Guess I'll have to drill out the rivets and find new wheels?
