So, compressor newly built
But now I don't have a project in the garage to tinker on with.
So fancy doing another compressor - maybe an old Ingersol Rand pump (type 30 or similar), coupled with a new 4hp motor (I'll had to find a vintage pump that will work well at 4hp - think the type 30 needs a bit more) mounted on a remote base feeding a couple of collector tanks in the corner. Or even a pair of pumps to get big air.
Like the idea of polishing the brass/alloy, using vintage decals and paint to make it look like its just rolled out of a 1940s garage. Hot Rod Compressor.
That means I need to sell this one (the Clarke one that has been rebuilt).
A new one is £514 (£429 + VAT).
This one owes me about £320 including all the parts.
What do you think a reasonable price would be to advertise it for?
Ha ha - yep. I wouldn't dream of charging people for my time, I'm no tradesman - just an amateur. But it is therapeutic having something to build in the garage. If I could cover my costs I'd be delighted but I'm not sure what a realistic price would be.
I'm just getting my mobile comp fixed up . just noticed the oil pump on my 3hp comp isnt pressurising but still runs ok . so that will be next to look at .shame to ruin it after its ran for 45 years trouble free
Hi , this was invaluable to me thank you ,would like to know the head bolt sequence if possible.
I have taken the head off mine the valves were a little dirty and needed a good clean ,the pistons were like new ,this is a 07 model and wouldn't build pressure at all ,changed the cap ,checked all the other items including a new pressure switch to no avail.
So this is last chance saloon, motor would run but cut out so it was getting back pressure, removed the belt from the pump and the motor was off like he'll and strong too so it was either the non return valve that was checked and seems to be ok or a leaking head gasket or bad valves ,piston rings ,looking at the piston condition it's very unlikely.
Hopefully when rebuilt it will be back to full working order, cheers
Start on the centre 4 bolts diagonally opposite each other then the end 2 and repeat the order in stages. Does it run up to pressure from empty and not restart? The NRV leaking is the usual suspect.
Great thanks,it starts fine every time but just runs until it trips out and that takes about 2_3 minutes and very little pressure has built, very odd but hopefully what I have done/replaced will cure it
Putting back together today so will give a update, cheers
Just been back in the garage ,just not convinced, took the belt off again started it up and wedged a piece of wood between the wheels to see how much pressure was needed to stop /slow down the motor and it took quite a bit of doing .
The pump is very free to spin and carnt see why the motor carnt turn it at speed ,the belt is really tight ,I've put a new nrv on now I'm really puzzled
Get yourself a cheap clamp meter to measure the current - do you know the motor is genuinely taking too much current or is the overload faulty? Then do the same with belts on and off to compare.
Hi guys cheers for the replys, motor runs all day without tripping but as soon as the belt is back on starts struggling and warming up
My next trick is borrowing a motor and that should confirm dead or alive ,will keep you posted cheers again
Yeah it's the motor, took it off and opened it up to find overheat melting to some of the plastic type rope that holds the copper coils together, just clinging on to life, well time to find a motor ,cheers for all the help guys and hope this can point someone else in the right direction in the future, cheers
Oh I see, thanks guys. The post in the 'for sale' section is currently 'pending moderator approval' so I think the link will start working once it is approved by the mods. Fingers crossed at least - I'm rubbish with IT.
