Ok. So my knowledge is limited on some machinery and its intended purpose. I thought that's one of the jobs they could perform. But you guys know and that's why I ask lots of questions. I appreciate your advice. If I don't ask I don't learn.

A woodruff key is the half round key, like a slice off a bar where as what you are, I think, meaning is commonly called a feather key, ie square or rectangular section with rounded ends.

Yes. I just refure to them as woodruff. Didn't no there was different names for them.

Had a good day today. Got the main headstock all cleaned and installed. Had to cut a Allen key down to get better access to the headstock bolts.

if u can get one cheap enough of any lathe u can modify it to fit the bed I got one given and fabricated a base to raise it and fit the bed on my lathe

u can cut an internal and external slot in the shaper making your own tool

I have a spare Colchester-style fixed steady but it's for a lathe with bigger swing, IIRC 7.5" rather than the Stu's 6.5"; I keep meaning to advertise it but it hides in a dark corner and keeps quiet

Vairy interestink , I'm checking with a mate to see if he has one for his Colchester [not sure what the swing on his is - it's a Student iirc ], and if not, would he be interested in the one of which you speak.

Sorry that should be Mk 1 1/2 Student, it's the last of the round head Students but it has the safety apron fitted so they called it the Mk 1 1/2.

Just before the introduction of the proper Mk. 2 the Mk. 1 was updated (as the jokingly-called "mark-one-and-a-half") with a completely redesigned and far safer apron. For the first time the bottom of the assembly was enclosed, allowing the gears to run in an oil bath, though oddly not all models had the sight-glass level indicator showing this feature was fitted. The function of selection and engagement of feeds was separated with a push-pull knob, protruding from the middle of the aprons face, selecting the feed and with engagement by flicking up and down a lever at the bottom of the apron - in the long-established Harrison manner. However, inside the apron the Colchester mechanism was quite different, and incorporated an important safety feature: an automatic feed knock-off for when cutting forces become too high. This was achieved by mounting the engagement mechanism on a separate carrier that transmitted drive to the carriage through a spring-loaded ball-bearing running up a ramp. To adjust the spring pressure (and so the release point) the engagement lever was given a threaded barrel (often found jammed tight) that the operator could screw in or out. By using a combination of a correctly-adjusted lever together with a bed stop a useful automatic-disengage could be set up by which means repeated runs could be made up to a shoulder.

Got more parts fitted today. Stripped and cleaned the chuck . All good. Noticed a couple of bits that need attention. Got a missing spring and a nut for this mechanism. You guys will no the names for these bits and what it's function is. The little mechanism goes behind the pulleys and is operated by a lever at the front.

Is it the brake link? Mine was different in having the 3rd shaft control as the motor had an electromagnetic brake.

Yes the manual says brake operating lever.
