compressor auto drain conversion

Got one on mine, very good and really don't cost much. A lot easier than scrabbling around under the compressor.

As @mtt.tr they scare the life out of you if you are stood next too them when they activiate.

My compressor is powered up 24/7 with a Chinese auto drain set for a 5 second burst every 45 minutes. I run it through a mains time clock to only run 08:00 - 18:00 so as not to scare the cottage guests

part number PTP281923 used to be standard on Leyland trucks and buses, there should be a few in scrapyards, but optima21s version would work fine.

ok, so i took a drive to machinemart on Sunday to get a new 4port pressure switch
and safety release valve, as im sure that they both are the original one's.

great, finely the reducing adaptors i ordered have arrived today. (bout time)

1/2 - 3/8 BSP and 1/4 - 1/8 BSP - handy to keep around for testing threaded holes.

ok so to confirm the hole in the underside of the tank is 3/8bsp (good shout carbon)

so i might need a bush and an elbow to give me the depth to clear
the wheel spindle thats 40mm below the tank.

but now i need to sort out an electric auto drain that will work.

before i sort the elbow, bush and pipe etc.

this looks ideal, 1/2 but i guess i can go from 3/8 to 1/2 fairly easy.
anyone else use one of these types..

Pretty much standard, they really are all the same, guarantee it will come in the same unmarked white box as all the others.

They are a good hustle sticking them on a service plan bought at £7 fitted for £150 charged out for annual servicing.


Consider a valve then a flange union then a short length of pipe makes getting it easier

I didn't know such a thing existed. I always thought of connecting an actuated valve to the drain in the nc position, so it would open when the compressor was switched off and drain without me having to fumble about for the valve.

I have one on the tank of mine.

It’s a T on the tank drain. A standard solenoid valve on one leg of the T, which fails open so that when the compressor is off it drains the tank.

The other leg has an auto drain. 10 secs every 15 minutes.

I’m running a plasma in a damp-ish part of the country hence the belt and braces approach.

It works.

ok, so i manage to source a 3/8 BSP M/F elbow and the autodrain.

so for the autodrain to clear the side of the tank il need an 3/8 M to 1/2 F straight adaptor.



something about 65mm long with 10mm threads either end.
i guess this is going to have to be made..

Does it matter if its on its side?

If not, you could screw it into the elbow and then the assembly into the tank, and it looks like it would fit as-is?

I don't think that it matters. Mine is fitted on its side. Mind you, I've not tested it yet

yeah, just stick it on it's side

and if you already have a 3/8 to 1/2 bush, turn the valve around so you can screw the bush and the 90' into the other end of it

nar the bushes i have are M/M

1/2 to 3/8
1/4 to 1/8
just for thread testing to see if stuff is bsp....

but no good for here as i need male to female.

You could extend the drain away from the bottom. The Bambi at work the drain is actually on top and has a dip tube inside (from factory)

il have a dig thru the scrap bin and box and see if i can find a bit of bar.
if i can find a bit big enough diameter, then i can just turn something up.

Just bear in mind you want to be able to remove the gauze
