compressor cant keep up sandblasting

good afternoon, i have just bought a sandblast cabinet to do parts of a camper im restoring, i have a,hydrovane 501 compressor but it can't keep up with the cabinet , i have it set at 120 but can only blast for around a minute before the pressure drops to around 40 so not enough to suck the media up from the cabinet,, after a bit of help as to what can so to increase the working time if possible thnaks

You're not going to like this... buy a bigger compressor. That one is feeble, at 4 cfm. You'll want something with at least 10 cfm, preferably 15 cfm.

Hi Tom,

The short answer is get a bigger compressor.

You'll need a good 10+ CFM to run that, your hydrovane is only providing a little over 4 CFM.

You might improve things a little if you reduce the pressure to about 90psi (which is what I run mine at), but ultimately, the compressor you have just isn't up to the job.

Going through something similar, been running my blaster from a Clarke 14cfm job (boxer 14/150) for a few years with no problems, recently acquired a hydrovane 502, so the next one 'up' from yours and it won't keep up with demand. Not so much of a problem as I can get 5 or 6 minutes out of it, which is about enough for my needs.
The other thing is that I run a pressure pot which is a bit more economical with air I think?
I've also got a very hungry cheap and nasty DA sander which is the same story. I appreciate the Clarke a bit more now.

The 502 is about 8 CFM so as you've discovered still not quite man enough for the blast cabinet or your DA (which are very air hungry!).

I run my cabinet off a Hydrovane 501 (may be 502 as I keep one as a spare and there is one of each). For tidly bits, line pressure regulated to 100 psi its fine (I have hundreds of metres of 25 mm blue mdpe underground pipe distributing air all over the site so lots of storage).

For anything more than a few square inches I start up my big 106 cfm Hydrovane or my 'road compressor' both of which are plumbed into the air network

Something I noticed a few years ago was that buying, say, 2 x 5 cfm compressors was cheaper than buying a single 10 cfm.

You could always just add another unit to your system and hook it in with hose, rather than lash out on a great big single unit. Simply connect the outlet hoses with a Y piece, thence to your blaster.

is there anyway to increase the cfm at all , i have a pressure pot as well but as,soon as i pressed the trigger it seemed to dump the lot in one go,, could i attach the pot to run beside the compressor

The way to increase the cfm is either more pumps or one bigger pump. Adding larger tanks may help short term but will require longer refill times between blasting

A suction gun

a suction gun will work on high pressure and when it drops it will still work just nowhere near as powefull . there not the best of things but will take light rust off if your not in a rush pressure pots like a constant high pressure and dont work well if it varies as post 19 snoopes thread try and get another comp to couple together
