I find it usually takes longer to find the bits you need to be able to put them back together again

and then more time when you have to take it apart again because it still isn't quite right

Agreed Snooper. I have a problem compressor and the valves are definitely the fault.

You say you've done the head gasket does that include the reed block gasket ?

There are several ways a compressor will overheat. Cooling, mechanical friction or hot air circulating in the pump. Continually compressing hot air (heat not carried away with the compressed air). I would expect a leak to lose air, not particularly overheat - unless the pump is only rated for intermittent operation.

To me that means leaking around/through the valve(s) is the cause.

Remove the air filter to see if any smoke is being blown back.

The faulty connection, in the plug top, was in very obvious need of rectification, whether or not there was a compressor fault. It should have been corrected long before starting this thread!
