You won’t because something like cruise control will always have a fail safe… the brake pedal…

I do feel like I’ve wondered into the over 50’s thread here!

I tend to agree you still need physical buttons so Tesla have it too extreme but touch screens aren’t inherently a bad idea

I can claim whatever I want, fact is I’m still in control of the car so It just doesn’t matter.

Not inherently bad, unless you have to reach across to touch an imaginary button, which you need to look at in order to “hit”. I’m surprised they’re allowed tbh.
But then am I? The lights that were allowed a few years ago also are not safe - silly self levelling mechanisms only worked on the car axles, making (and how could they) no allowances for dips in the road with oncoming traffic in them, and while we’re at it, allowing vans to have lights at eye height for car drivers...

What do you have to reach over to, to touch? Nothing I would argue. Anything to maintain safe control of a car is within the vicinity of the steering wheel.
Anything on a touch screen is fluff to make you feel more comfortable.

Which is why I said about Tesla going too far with the gear direction being on the screen on the model S and the Speedo being on the only centre screen on the model 3 etc.

But having entertainment and car settings on a touch screen isn’t a bad idea, there’s an argument to be had about climate controls wether they should be physical buttons or not but it’s not key to driving a car safely.

Everything like cruise control, headlight switches, indicators etc. still for the most part (Tesla aside) are tactile buttons/switches as far as I’m aware

Seriously, I don’t understand why touchscreens are such an issue and like it or not, they’re the future.

Because when you have to take your eyes off the road to find the virtual button on the flippin' screen to get to climate, then find the ones to warm up, cool down, blow air at the side, or your feet or shut the damn radio up . . .

When in my older bangers the button to shut the radio up was exactly where I left it - on the LHS of the radio which was still where it was yesterday in the dash . . .

The heater control dial/lever also in the same place in the dash as it was an hour ago . .

At 60mph, you cover a lot of ground while not fully concentrating on the road . . . it might perhaps explain the random slowing down and veering around a lot of vehicles seem to do these days.

Another 'option' I have is automatic headlight assist ..it dips the main beam automatically and is faster and more reliable than you can do yourself and never, ever, gets caught out .. again amazing and much safer than having to think and then dip every time a car comes along ....

Or one that reacted to the cab top lights on vans and HGVS that you see first over hedges, crests etc, indicating something coming the other way, that by the time you've see the headlights, the driver has got fed up with being dazzled and switched on several million candle-power of lamps arrayed along the front of the sleeper . . .

We've a touchscreen tablet in our pug expert.

It's fine for GPS and selecting what radio channel's.

But like electric handbrakes.

Why ?

Really don't need it.

Why electric handbrakes? Apart from the obvious sales gimmick / must have it becomes a profit point as soon as the warranty runs out. As the dealer margins have been cut back and discounting has reduced the profit margin the poor old dealer has to have some form of income.

Absolutely dead right. It would be great to have auto lights that anticipated the oncoming vehicle by "seeing" the glimmer of oncoming lights before they actually appeared. That could be fun when they dip your lights to react to a shop display lights or similar.

I hate touch screens in cars. Try jabbing a button on the screen with all the pot holes on our roads. You tend to miss several times. Definitely not safe.
The nicest system I used was on an Insignia that had a nice command wheel on the centre console.
The worst was on the next model Insignia that had some weird mouse pad

I caught 'indoors holding the car at traffic lights by slipping the clutch.
