As you can see, the orange peel becomes dry spray within 5-10mm of the edge of the roof, and the lip that the tailgate lifts over didn't get much coverage at all. The whole roof needs flatting and polishing, but I'd rather avoid a whole new coat if I can avoid it.
So, any recommendations? I'd love to hear more about your magic flap*, steve.
Only other picture I have is of the back end of the car:
You can see the rubber "spoiler" above the glass hatch and the very thin white line above it. That thin line isn't light reflection, that's what you can see in close-up.
I'll give your method a go steve, using as soft a masking line as I can manage (folding the tape back on itself). It's VERY warm at the moment (28 degs), so I can go slow with the coats and let the solvents evaporate, and on the last clear I'll mix in some fade-out thinners as langy suggested, before blowing on another coating of thinner.
If I bodge it all up, I'll just redo the whole roof and use fade-out at the tops of the pillars, since that's whats at stake here.
as steveo say and as i said earlier you can not mask and blend a base colour, you have to let it blend out of its own free will mate or you will see the edge. So want to show you how to do it. Its very frustrating.
Take the tail gate off and the rubber seal and fill the hole with cardboard then paint over the edge down onto the lip where the seal was. That just looks like you finished your stroke early (ooer missus) with the gun instead of running off the edge of the panel so you got a dry edge.
