Defender rebuild - leave galvanised or paint?

My defender is stripped for bulkhead and chassis galvanising, will get galvanised body cappings while I am at it.

So do I get paint or leave galvanised like this?

I quite like the galvy look.

I think of it as a high speed tractor of largely 1950's engineering, so relatively high maintenance but easy to work on. Sad but I enjoy working on it

That was my first thought then when I saw the galvanized bulkhead, I thought it looked quite good. My paintwork has lots of character - mainly from branches rubbing against it on forest tracks, so any freshly painted bits will force me to repaint it all or it will stick out as repainted.....decissions

Just been reading the Landrover Security thread, someone advised me to paint my new galvanised chassis black so its less obvious to thieves as a galvanised chassis will be more desirable.

I should get a new Richards chassis delivered next week, so another decision - to paint the chassis or not?

I live in a remote area with little vehicle crime, though make the occasional trip to Glasgow.

You couldn't be more right!!

Black chassis best. I don't like the look of the galv bulkhead, I think the galv cappings look good but you need galv trim on the doors to follow it through.

In my experience of Landrovers,if they want it its usually for bits or to be cloned, all you can do is have some security and rely on the insurance but keep good records incase of a claim and ideally an agreed value.

I painted my new galvanised Disco chassis, not for the aesthetics or security issues, but because zinc does gradually dissolve away. A coat of paint slows the process

I cannot understand why anybody wouldn't paint a galv chassis.

Aside from the fact that galv is just another form of protection which does not last forever and will still eventually lead to a rusty chassis, and thus paint will make it last longer, these vehicles are so attracted to thieves that it's madness to make the problem worse by making it obvious that it's got a galv chassis.

I would leave the cappings galve, after all how often do you see them rotting, and definitely paint the galve chassis. Road salt will start corroding it pronto. The galve will look after you if you look after it.
I 'T' washed mine then used protec container guard paint but it's not stuck well at all. If I was doing it again I would use epoxy primer, God rest the patron saint of epoxy primer, Langy, topcoated with some sort of synthetic enamel. Either that or Lechler Technogrip straight onto the galve.

Had some bad luck with my old chassis, looked ok after blasting but holes appeared at rear chassis against the rear cross member after galvanising, I expect from mud in the chassis that the pressure washer had not removed some years ago. So ended up with a new galvanised marsland chassis:

Budget now blown so paintwork will have to wait, picked up a good roof without a sunroof, which will save being rained on, on icy mornings, but is a different shade of green.

I have galv cappings on my 90, more because I couldn't be bothered to paint them when I swapped them. Plus as it's grey they don't stand out too much. It is also well overdue a new chassis, but it will have to wait until the 110 is done.

I'll wave if I see you about, I work in Lochgilphead a few days most weeks.

No place is safe for a landrover to be safe two gone here one within minutes in a very remote farm
