Defender rebuild - leave galvanised or paint?

Series doors are pretty flimsy - I'd definitely not swap Defender ones for them.

The 2005-on all-steel ones with the one-piece pressed frames are the way to go.

My TD5 doors have not lasted well: steel frame near internal lock push button has cracked through twice - and my welding is failing again. While the bottoms of the steel frame are rotten. Electric window on drivers side has had intermittent faults as has the central locking. And the locks jamming in sub zero temperatures.

I thought the simplicity of Series doors would be an improvement, there is not much strength in my defender doors, am relying on my tree sliders for a side impact.

Post 2005 doors not cheap., will have a think about it.

Perhaps when they dull down I will paint the bumpers and axles. Galvanising the axles was probably an extravagance!

lol, first time through this thread and had to laugh at you painting the chassis and then leaving all the other galv as bright

Richards reckon their chassis are good for at least 20 years and I like the look of the galv chassis anyway but you could have painted the diff nose silver

After playing I suggest you clean any mud off of the galv as otherwise it seems to stain

Some finishing touches - picked up a headlining to match the new roof without a sunroof:

Yikes - I had to drill them for my heated mirrors and they were a lot tougher to drill than the original cast ones producing very long strings of swarf. They are a cast austenitic stainless and i would hope stronger than the originals. that had massive wear on the hinges.

Who doesn't like a little polished stainless

Its been through the wars a few times, usually from going to near the edge of a soft ditch, happened to the passenger door when I landed on a rock outcrop.

Fitting treesliders reduces the dents, this was a later off on the other side:

Got our son's 90 200tdi on the drive; cutting out the bulkhead and replacing it with a bar to give a bit more leg room, anyway, went out one morning to find both front doors open, fortunately, no front seats in. Truck Lok on the steering wheel, pedal locks on and the battery inside our house.
Didn't stop somebody fancying their chances though.
When he used to park it on a slight hill opposite our house, one day we saw an empty low loader reversing up in front of it, we walked across to it rather purposely and watched them drive swiftly off.

Well decided to give my Landy a once over before I start chemo. The cheap rear prop I bought just over a year ago has proved a complete waste, obvious wear on the splines of the sliding joint and already replaced the Universal Joints with HD Hardy Splicers....

So off with:

and purchased a wide angle Heavy duty with larger UJ'a from Gwynn Lewis:

Seems a quality bit of kit.

Should get new rear disks, calipers and pads delivered tomorrow and an Ashcroft Limited Slip diff is on order.

Well noisy rear diff had created a fair bit of metallic debris in the oil after 1500 miles since put into the galvanised axle:

So noisy rear diff out for a nice shiny Ashcroft Transmissions Limited Slip Diff:

All quiet now:

Hopefully that will be everything on the Landy for quite a few months..... I would hate to add up what I have spent on it this year....
