From repairing quite a few different cordless drills over the years I have noticed that the dewalt are no better built than any of the other run of the mill drills. The only units that stands out is the XRP drills with the 3 speed gearbox. Incredibly well built, good strong motor & gearbox plus wrist breaking torque in low gear!

On the other hand the Makitas are much better thought out & put together. The motors come in several bits so instead of having to buy a whole motor like dewalt & most others you can get each bit separately. It uses proper roller bearings in the motor instead of bronze bushings like everyone else. You can replace the brushes, on many other drills you have to fit a new motor as the brushes are part of it. In general their parts prices are quite reasonable & easy to source.

Agreed. I stupidly burnt out a not very old Makita 9554 240v grinder recently, in my defence I was wearing welding gloves so didn’t realise it was so hot. Brand new armature complete with roller bearings was £13, grinder back working like new again.

I've been buying and using mostly dewalt for the last 7 or 8 years, other than for anything with a circular blade in it where I tend to buy Evolution as I can't justify the additional spend on the dewalt.

Other than a DOA drill that was replaced with no fuss by screwfix I have nothing but praise for the range. Although I'm "only" a DIYer they get a lot of use and have been used in a lot of manky projects and places.

All the big brands are all much of a muchness. Some bits better than others and vice versa.

I use dewalt primarily because Im tied to the batteries and they (IMO) are far and away the most comfortable in the hand.

As long as the tool does what you need it to do then the rest is just willy waving.

Anything corded will almost always be Metabo if it needs to last.

Exactly that. Now that I'm in, I'm in. Batteries are bloody expensive!
