Did anyone ever figure out the thread on a Butane bottle?

Anyway, small bottles done and works perfectly, I had no problem drilling 19mm and tapping 1/2" BSP worked beautifully, Now for the big one, that should be easy as there's nothing to do really. I ordered the fitting from the bay just got to use some gas left in it and wash it out and it will be sorted. Enjoyed doing them.

Oh! before anyone says anything. that hose coming of the compressor is not the one going to that bottle, the bottle is on a ball valve in the centre of the air receiver, you can see the pipe on the comp is rubber, the one on the tank isn't :-)

That's what I've done for many years, I've got a 13 kilo cylinder that I pump up. I've fitted it with a gauge & PCL fittings & pump it to about 125psi. You can blow up about 4 semi flat tyres with it before it's flat. If was picking up a car that had been stood for a while I would chuck in it in the back of the car to pump the tyres. I'm a lazy sod & why use a pump if you can do it easily.

Just for checking & doing tyres at home, it will do quite a few before it needs pumping again. I leave it pumped in the shed & just take it out when I want it, a lot easier than dragging out the compressor

Many have done it for years and I used to use a small helium tank for my version.

Must have a run out to our local recycling place to see if I can pick up a bottle or two. If I got a big[ish] one I could have it as an extra tank for my woefully inadequate [in capacity terms] Lidl one - would that work OK? I'd have to fit the Euro size connectors to fit with what I have already.

That and a small one should see me fixed.

Excellent idea guys, go for it, One thing though, you will see in the picture I have a ball valve tap fitted to the bottle and then a female air coupler, that will be changed when my parts arrive, it needs to be a male so every now and then you can invert the bottle, open the tap and let the water out. You can't do that with the female on as it shuts off.
Luckily I have one of those small compressors that go with a brad nailer, with a tank about half the size of one of these bottles, I use that to check the car tyres.
I picked up a 47k propane yesterday and have ordered a readily available fitting from Ebay, ready to make a 100 ltr or more bottle, but when I checked it, it's still got gas in it, I had my fireball heater on in the workshop all afternoon though :-) Going out there in a minute and will put it on again, with a bit of luck it will be empty by the time the fitting arrives.

Yes mate, but read about duty cycles, you could end up with a tank so big that a small compressor will run too long trying to fill it and get very hot and damaged.

S.M.Fat, I've added a photo to show how I've done it, I've used standard galv plumbing fittings to do it. The thing with a tap on is the fitting I use to fill it using a standard airline hose. I made it over 40 years ago as a receiver for a home made compressor & have used it on 2 others since then. It's far easier to drag outside for doing tyres etc.
When I made it up, I worked for a plumbers merchant, so it helped, but the fittings are readily available anywhere

Edit. The brass thing stuck up is a pressure gauge, I should have taken it from a different angle to show it.

I may well do mate, I haven't decided which method to do yet, I have a couple of these bottles I'm messing with.

Question for all.. How much would you pay for an empty 47k propane? I put an add on the local facebook for sale site and a couple of people have said they have got bottles but when I ask how much they want, they say oh! I don't know what they are worth, so they want me to sell it and buy it :-(

I put an ad on the local Freecycle group requesting empty bottles and I got inundated with offers, in the end I collected 2 x 47kg and 4 x 13kg bottles of which 2 were full but I must have turned down about 12 various bottles. Seems that people have them cluttering up their gardens and don't know what to do with them.

Funny you should say that mate, that was the first thing I thought of. I joined the local group and then tried to post a wanted. it said you are waiting to be authorised. Ok. couple of days later I tried again, still the same, a week, still the same. I emailed the admin and gave it a couple of days, still the same. Two weeks now, still the same. Bloody abysmal!

So then I thought there must be a for sale group on Facebook for the local area. I only moved here 11 months ago by the way. I found that, in fact I found three, I joined them all and put a wanted on them. I got one reply from a woman who said she had three, I asked her how much she wanted for one, waited three days for a reply and she said she didn't know! I said ok well normally you would just give them back when you get a refil so how about a fiver? three days nothing. I posted again asking if she was going to reply, eventually she said that would be ok, nothing about where to fetch it from etc. I asked for her poscode and have never heard from her since, does my bloody head in.

Then I got a pm from someone saying I think my dad has some I will ask, after nearly another week of waiting for replies I eventually collected one from his dad.
God it was like having teeth pulled, what is it with people, they all want help but when you ask it's all deviousness in case they can get more money and if not they can't be assed, it aint worth the trouble. Yeah until they want something. Wonderful bloody world we live in, But I'm not bitter :-)

This morning I was given an empty Helium party balloon cylinder.
The valve contains the ballon filling fitting.

The thread in the tank. along with a thicker sweated in ring pulled out when I removed the valve.
It turns out the thread on the valve was M11.

Ok finally used up the gas in this 47K cylinder and ready to take the valve off so I can fill it with soapy water,

Is the tap a left hand thread as well as the reg hole? I did briefly try but it seems hellishly tight

All the gas bottles i've done have had a normal thread, I find cutting the safety collar makes things easier then a bit of scaffold pole on a pair of stillsons works to get the tap off.

Strange! I posted that yesterday and it's only shown up today as I went to post this??

Anyway, Did as you said, Steel bar, big Stillson and got it off ok with a bit of puffing and grunting, will fill it with soapy water and leave it overnight and hope it doesn't blow away

Are you trying to remove the stenching agent ?
