Diesel cab heater

I have a four litre tank on mine to heat the cab on a VW T5 so not really a lot of space to heat. Eberspacher airtronic d2 has a max fuel consumption of 0.28 l/h down to 0.1 l/h. Running at max for 8 hours would use approx 2.24 litres. I think the controller also influences the amount of fuel, the one I have automatically regulates the output. At start up it runs at max then as it gets closer to the target temp it reduces the fan and fuel pump.

I did think about a second tank for red / kero purely for the heater. It used so little in my pick up I couldn’t be bothered and it’s dead now (the Chinese one that is). Was handy for keeping dogs and truck at a sensible temperature.

decided not to on camper as out of UK you can’t get red anyhow

How big a fuel tank do you run? I’ve not bought kerosene/paraffin before, only red and white from the local fuels supplier

Hello, anyone near you with oil fired central heating? I use a Lidl oil transfer pump to fill up a couple of 5L cans. Last lot of kero I bought was about 30p per litre.

You can get green diesel in most of Europe.
For agricultural use. Many petrol stations have the pump on the forecourt.
I know cos I nearly filled up with it. Thought it meant environmentaly friendly not green as in colour

Never knew that. I had heard it was a thing in Ireland but thought it was to do with different rates north and south or something

I've been considering one of the chinese heaters for a while, as the big indirect space heater I'm currently using takes up a bit too much room in the workshop, and is a bit all or nothing, so I think one of these smaller heaters ran for an hour or so before venturing into the workshop would be enough to make it tolerable.

I then remembered I have an old Eberspacher that's been languishing on top of a cupboard for years, so lifted it down today, put some fresh fuel in the make shift fuel bottle (an old 1l oil bottle), connected it up, and switched it on. Fuel pump didn't kick in, but a few gentle taps with a suitable implement, and it started clicking. Took another restart attempt, but it fired into life and ran. Not bad for something that must be over 20 years old, and hasn't been run for over 10.

I just need to find a bigger fuel tank, drill a couple holes through the workshop wall, and see if it'll provide enough heat.
And it also reminded there should be a coolant heating version buried in another shed...

Bet you wouldn’t do that with a Chinese one!!

those coolant heaters are well worth having. Really good when it’s proper cold out. Truck engine is nice and warm when you start it.

The other month I went to our local supplier and paid 44p a litre for a 20 litre jerry can full

the only place i can get small quantity of kero down here want 90p a litre for minimum 25l.

anyone know of any better way of getting hold of cheap oil? i can get red diesel far cheaper....

so use red diesel
thats what they should be run on

sure but they are equally happy on kero, and id like to save a few quid.

You will actually get a bit more heat out of them on diesel but it will also soot up more quickly.
I use an old IBC as a tank and order 1000L at a time.

Good heater no issues been in 18 months no issues great for Telehandler as it seldom runs long enough to get the engine heater warm
this works great for de-icing
