yes l did consider one of them in fact l threw one in the scrap
l stripped an old fire engine to get the V8 perkins and auto box from for one of my other projects, in the side lockers was one of them imp powered pumps which we had a play with ok but petrol powered , we had to run it near flat out to get reasonable flow/pressure and the fuel consumption was horrific, clearly if your house is on fire then economics dont come into it just get the fire out at any cost, but l want to leave this pump running for a couple of days at a time which is why l chose a perkins over a transit engine, l thought rightly or wrongly it would be more economical ?
anyway if l used a proper pump l wouldent need to make one and wheres the fun in that

l still have the pump off the back of the fire engine so if this one fails to deliver we can go up a step by using that and a cummins engine

The pump you have there is fairly weeny, it won't absorb more than 10-15hp. The plan you have for priming it should work ok. What are you pumping? Turbid(muddy) water may cause it to wear out, as it's not designed as a trash pump.

hi yes its pond water l want to pump, l have a fish pond that is spring fed so always full and 400m away is a duck pond that is maybe 10' higher and is fed by rain water of the field and this year has been very lacking in rain and the pond isent much of a pond,
the fish pond is about 2m deep at the end l intend to pump from so would be able to suspend the pick up pipe a foot or so below the surface and keep it away from the muddy bottom ? fish will need to be bendy if they are to survive a trip through the pump impellor though

do you know much about pumps then penfold ??

I use them at work and occasionally have to rebuild them; I'm a marine engineer on a standby ship. Save the fish a mincing by using a coarse strainer on the suction end; make one out of tube and drill it full of holes or form one out of pre-pierced steel sheet.

l have this old single cylinder pump but it split its diaphram and l havent been able to locate a spare, any ideas who might stock one ?

Machine mart do a 2" 6.5hp pump for £204, it does 416 litres per min with a head height of 26 meteres

416 lts per min equates to 416 x 60 = 24960 litres per hour (or 24960/4.546 = 5490 gallons per hour) which is a massive amount of water.

Not much fun going to MM though.

That small pump looks as though it would be a lot easier to repair, was it a nitrile sheet or ptfe type gasket?, any name on the pump. (I work on a chemical plant with loads of pumps)

there is a name on the pump but l cant remember what it is at the mo will have a look and report back

l have one of those little honda pumps, you can leave it out in all weather and it still starts first pull, l have it bolted on the front of my watering can right now, seen here http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=26900&highlight=delux

down side to it is thats its way to small to shift enough water and that its a petrol with a small tank, l did try using it but l could only get around half an hour on a tank so l cant leave it running for a day or two

well l connected, l went looking in my dead landrover spares box and found a gearbox output flange, so close to what l needed its not true

this is the splined coupling which l need to connect to the ldv gearbox which is an lt77, the flange l found was a multi spline with a biggish bore that the water pump coupler nearly dropped straight in, it just needed half a mill of in the lath and then putting in a big press and hey pressto lt77 one end and water pump splines the other

Nice work, and serious toys... The Perkins looked familiar, a Prima, AKA Austin Montego/ Freight Rover donk. Also used for Volvo Marine applications. Spares tend to be more available from the USA nowadays.
I rebuilt a couple, one used in a project for pine bark mulch.

I rebuilt a couple, one used in a project for pine bark mulch.

l managed a bit more this afternoon, no fancy lazer cut mounting plate just some strap stitched together, exhaust on and playing with a gas tank for the diesel tank

Some bit of kit. But can't help thinking it a big engine for the pump. Presumably it was cheap. Plus good fun making it. Stylish construction.

As for popular, it was in the Montego. But the Freight Rover was a bit antiquated, more like the brick outhouse. No point in a radio in those, the engine was VERY noisy. A Transit or Trafic was civilised.
Volvo Marine did sell a lot of them, as MD 22s or TMD22s with a turbo. Solid reliable unit.

I used the whole drive train. Just shortened the two piece propshaft to a foot long double universal that retained the sliding section. Welded the diff and cut off one side of the axle. Double big V-belt pulleys onto the hub. This drove a stone mill. Really big bit of kit that hammered rock into gravel. It was under used for pine bark. But was cheap to make as all the bits cost little. Used it to process around 500 cu.mt of mulch a week.
Also made a big rotating sieve. A conveyer fed the mulch into the upper end of the tilted drum. As it worked its way down, three grades of mesh sorted the sizes until the biggest bits fell out the end. That was 2mt dia by 4mt long. Luckily there were no neighbours downwind, as quite a lot of dust was generated

well l suppose you could look at that way but l prefer to think the pump is to small for the engine

the pump dose look a bit small now but it was free, the ldv was 50 quid doubt l will go over budget here lol

l would like a bigger pump but l know jack about pumping, l have 400m of 80mm bore plastic pipe to push the water through so even if l has a billion gallon a minute pump there must be some limit to what l can get through before the pipe explodes
